Hannah Donoghue was in for the surprise of her life when she got pregnant with triplets after just one date, despite being on the pill. Surprisingly, this was not the first time.
No matter how many years or dollars of research are conducted, chances are low that we'll ever reach a point where we know everything there is to know about the human body. Just take the subject of pregnancy for example. Seeing as how it is the key to our inception, one would assume mankind is well-versed in every aspect of this process by now. 29-year-old Hannah Donaghue from Northampton probably thought the same when she started using contraceptive pills. However, her body decided to prove her wrong not one, not twice, but a total of three times.
Now, a mother-of-five, Hannah chalked up her first pregnancy to her somehow falling in the one percent error margin of contraceptives. She even changed her pill and used it religiously, but it failed her yet again. Despite not having time to prepare for it, she wholeheartedly took to motherhood for her two daughters. Fast forward eight years later, she found herself at a party where she ran into an old flame, and one thing led to another and the two of them enjoyed a night of passion. Since she was still on the pill, Hannah didn't expect to get pregnant after just the one date. Let alone pregnant with triplets.
According to The Sun, Hannah and 30-year-old Ben Fagan welcomed their adorable triplets via cesarean at 32 weeks of pregnancy in October 2018. Realizing that the pill wasn't of any use to her, the mother of five has given up taking it ever since. Hannah spoke about her journey into motherhood right from when it all began. "I stared at the pregnancy test stick in my hand. There they were, the unmistakable little blue lines. I couldn’t believe it. I was pregnant – AGAIN. For the third time. The first time I'd fallen pregnant while taking the contraceptive pill I’d assumed I was just one of the one percent of women who got unlucky."
"I was 18 and living in a one-bedroom flat with my boyfriend, so it certainly wasn't planned and I was nowhere near ready to start a family. But when our daughter Megan, now 10, was born I took to motherhood straight away. I'd worked in a nursery so caring for her came naturally to me, but I wasn't planning on having another any time soon. I went to the GP and switched my pill, then made sure I took it religiously at the same time every day. But just two months later, I felt a familiar twinge and realized my period was late - it couldn't have happened again, surely?", she continued.
Hannah said that she almost fainted when she saw the two little blue lines confirming her second pregnancy. She was understandably tensed about how she and her then-boyfriend would cope with another baby, as well as the prospect of having to explain a second surprise pregnancy to people. However, lucky for her, her mother became her pillar of strength during the stressful period and soon Hannah welcomed her second daughter called Charlie, who is now eight-years-old. By this point, Hannah was losing faith in the pill and switched to the contraceptive implant.
Unfortunately, she had to get back on the pill eight years later as the implant began causing problems for her. It was at this point that life brought Ben, who as per a Daily Mail report already had a daughter named Isla from a previous relationship, back into her life. "I'd split up with my boyfriend at this point and wasn't looking to meet anyone new," said Hannah. "But then I bumped into Ben at a party. I'd known him years earlier and there was definite chemistry between us, and that night we ended up going home together. Afterward my period arrived as normal - but two weeks later I woke up feeling something wet in my pajama bottoms. I looked down and there was blood everywhere."
"I took myself to the hospital, where doctors examined me and said I could be pregnant. Shell-shocked, I called Ben and he rushed to the hospital, where I was then taken for a scan. I lay on the table and the sonographer ran the scanner over my stomach. 'There's one heartbeat,' she said. 'And there's the second one.' I thought I'd misheard her. How could there possibly be two babies in there? 'And there's the third one,' she added. What? She was telling me I was pregnant with three babies?! I thought she must have been joking. I was still in shock as she pointed out the three heartbeats flickering on the screen," Hannah continued.
Naturally, the news of three babies on the way was a major shock to Hannah and Ben. Even surprising was the fact that their triplets were non-identical, which meant that they had all been conceived from a different egg. "They each had their own placenta and own amniotic sac. So not only had my body managed to fall pregnant while I was on the pill, it had managed to produce three separate eggs all at once - and they had all fertilized," marveled Hannah. To his benefit, Ben managed to find humor in the situation and joked, "We're going to need a limo for all these."
Soon the pair began making plans to welcome their triplets while getting to know each other and officially start their courtship at the same time. And while the doctors suggested that they consider terminating one of the three babies growing in Hannah's belly 10 weeks into the pregnancy, the couple refused to even discuss it. At 16 weeks, they found out that they had two girls and one boy on the way. Everything was fine until the 28th week. When the babies' movement started to reduce, the doctors got Hannah on steroids in order to develop their lungs, keeping in mind the possibility of an early delivery.
And though Hannah managed to hang on for another 4 weeks, the doctors delivered sisters Ella Rose and Kasey and brother Lester by cesarean 32 weeks into the pregnancy. Despite being tiny and frail, the triplets turned out to have a strong will to survive because of which their doting parents and two older sisters were able to take them home after 18 days. With Ben having moved in by this point and the three new tiny additions to the family, Hannah had her hands full for the first few weeks. The big happy family is now looking to move into a bigger house that can accommodate all seven of them comfortably.
