The police officers, who rescued the woman, don't necessarily believe him and say that the woman's physical condition indicates that she has been starved for days.
Police officers recently rescued a woman who was allegedly locked up in a toilet by her husband for over a year. The shocking incident unfolded in the Indian state of Haryana in the Panipat district. The husband, a resident of Rishpur village, claimed that his wife has been mentally unstable for quite some time but authorities do not necessarily believe him. The rescue operation was led by Women Protection and Child Marriage Prohibition Officer Rajni Gupta, who revealed that the victim did not seem mentally unstable. She further noted that the woman's physical conditions indicated that she had been starved for days.

It seems that woman has not eaten anything for many days." Contrary to this, the woman's husband claimed that he had taken her to several doctors but her mental condition did not show any improvement. Moreover, he claimed that the woman refused to sit outside with them and preferred to stay aloof. "She was mentally unstable. We ask her to sit outside but she does not sit there. We have taken her to doctors but there was no improvement in her condition," he said according to the Indian Express.

We rescued her and washed her hair. We have filed a police complaint. Police will take action accordingly," she said. A doctor will be consulted by the authorities to ascertain the mental status of the woman.

Wives being tortured by their husbands is unfortunately rampant in India and most of the cases stem from their greed for dowry. A woman from Noida hung herself earlier in the year after allegedly being unable to tolerate the abuse her in-laws subjected her to. The husband and his family were arrested immediately after the deceased's family claimed that it might be a case of dowry.
The incident happened in April and officers rushed to the residence around 11:15 pm after receiving a call about the death on their helpline. The woman's body was then sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The woman's brother arrived at the village from Ghaziabad and informed the police that she had gotten married in November last year. Her uncle revealed that the deceased and her husband used to work at the same company and after a few months decided to tie the knot. Initially, everything seemed to be fine but then the woman's in-laws began making demands for dowry. "She had been mentally troubled because of this for some time now," said the uncle according to Times Now News. A complaint was lodged against the husband, his brother and parents and they were arrested under section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. While it appeared to be a case of suicide, police noted that there were some injuries on the woman's body.
