US Women's Soccer Stars Ali Krieger And Ashlyn Harris Are Engaged, To Marry Soon: "Don’t Have To Hide Anything" Anymore

The soccer stars found two true love on the pitch. The game, and then each other. They have now announced their engagement.

The stars of the National Women's Soccer League reportedly announced their engagement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, earlier this week. The romance between the two stars started around a decade ago when they met on the pitch while playing for the U.S. National Team. Krieger proposed to Harris after the last game of the season while the couple was having a picnic on Clearwater Beach. The two took a selfie together after which Harris surprised Krieger with a ring. In Krieger's opinion, it was the right time to propose. The couple announced that they will be getting married later this year, most probably after the World Cup. They have planned to have their wedding in Florida during the summer. The two first met in 2010 and have been great together ever since. The best thing is that they haven't let their off-field romance come in the way of their game. Before the wedding, they plan to focus on their first love, soccer, as they defend their World Cup in France.

“We became really close friends, and we just hung out, we clicked, and we had so much in common,” Harris, 33, says of when the two first met in 2010. “We always sat next to each other on the bus and on flights, and we kind of just talked about our dreams and our hopes and what we wanted to do one day when we grew up. Because at the time, we were kids.” She further continued saying that the rest as we all know is history. “Here we are nine years later, and we’re going to be getting married this year.”

They even opened up a little on how they were attracted to each other before they got together. For Krieger, 34, it was Harris’ “creativity and ambition” that first got to her. Also, her eyes! "It was her big, beautiful brown eyes,” she tells the magazine. “She has these unbelievable tiger eyes. I just felt like every time she was talking, I wasn’t even paying attention to what she was saying.” Both Krieger and Harris play for the Orlando Pride. Krieger plays as a defender while Harris is the goalkeeper for the team. The duo did not publicly announce their relationship until recently.

However, the fans picked up on their chemistry a long time ago. The fans even came up with a nickname for them - 'Krashlyn'. The reason they did not want to announce their relationship publicly was that they did not want to create a distraction for their teammates or the franchise. “We wanted to be professional and make sure that we showed up every day and did our job and it wasn’t just because we were together, it was because we love what we do, and we’re really good at what we do,” said Krieger. “And that was most important for us.”

While announcing their engagement after a nine-year-long relationship, they claimed that they finally feel more comfortable about letting the world know about them. “We became more and more confident within and ourselves and then clearly within our relationship,” said Harris. “We were like, now is the right time … and I feel like it’s a massive weight off of my shoulders. Finally, after all these years, I just feel like I don’t have to hide anything or feel like I’m not living up to the community I’m in.” Although the engagement was only announced earlier this week, the proposal took place a few months ago.

On September 15, the couple went on a picnic together to Clearwater Beach. While spending time together on the rocks they decided to take a picture together. As soon as they were done with the selfie with the sunset in the background, Harris surprised Krieger with a ring. She popped the question at the perfect time. “It was a really good time because I felt really on the same page with her, and really excited about our future and talking about our future plans with kids, and family, and things like that,” said Krieger. "It just was a really good time. I was really surprised because it just seemed like another weekend getaway for us. I wasn’t really thinking about it at all!”

Harris added, “It was just us and this beautiful scenery, and I was just like … she was making me laugh, she wanted me to take pictures, and here I am. This is what I’m gonna be doing the rest of my life. It just all froze and I was like, ‘this is it.’ " The couple have planned to hold their wedding ceremony in Florida by the end of this year. They have their minds set on the World Cup for now. Harris has been picked up to be in the squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup this year and is currently busy in training as the team prepares to defend their title.

The FIFA Women's World Cup will be held in France during the summer. The competition will start on June 7 and will go on for an entire month. The United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) won the World Cup four years back in Canada. They faced Japan in the finals and won by five goals to two. The U.S. has won the World Cup three times so far and hope to add another one to the list this year. The group stage of the World Cup looks fairly easy with Sweden the only potential competition for them.
