"You ARE NOT a bad pet owner because you cannot afford emergency medical bills."
This year has been hard on most of us, emotionally as well as financially. While some of us have managed to scrape through, there are others that have been struggling to make ends meet. Recently, one person took to Reddit to take their struggles during the pandemic. The person shared that since they can't afford to pay the bills at the vet, they have decided to euthanize their sick dog. I can’t afford vet care so we are saying goodbye to my beloved dog tomorrow. The Redditor claims that they love this dog more than any pet they've ever owned, but is forced to take such a decision due to their circumstances.
If you have to euthanize your dog PLEASE stay in the room with them. I know it’s hard for you, but it’s even harder for them. They don’t understand. They’re in a strange place with strange people. Don’t leave them alone during their last minutes. ❤️— Heather Creswell (@CreswellHeather) August 21, 2020
She’s been my constant companion for the last 12 years. She grew up with my daughter and me as a single parent for half of those years. The dog aged rapidly over the past couple of months, but its health just kept deteriorating. Despite trying everything the OP just couldn't afford to pay for more treatments. I literally have scraped together my change and held off paying rent that was due several days ago to afford to have her euthanized. This is breaking my heart but I can’t afford to treat what might be wrong with her, if there even is something beyond her just being a very large breed dog who is very old.
I can absolutely relate to that feeling. I had to euthanize my dog in April and I’m still crying every day. I’m sorry you’re going through this .... and I really hope you decide to stay.— lauren 👽 𝐈 𝐕𝐎𝐓𝐄 (@mydarkfairytale) August 19, 2020
The OP also mentioned how the pandemic is to blame for the choice they had to make, a rather difficult one at that. I just want to throw out that the pandemic has just destroyed so many people’s finances, mine included, that a lot of us are barely hanging on, never mind paying for vet bills. I’ve called and emailed multiple vets and none will work with us so I found a home vet service to come and euthanize her in the comfort of our property where she will also be buried. It's definitely not going to be easy to see your dog being put down because you can't afford to pay for treatment, but it is what it is.
OP then shared a word of encouragement to people who are struggling during these tough times. Please try to remember that so many of us are struggling today. You ARE NOT a bad pet owner because you cannot afford emergency medical bills. Most Americans cannot afford emergency expenses of 400 or more regardless of what it is. I used to be able to and did take her to the vet regularly. Times change and I am going to miss this dog so much. I cannot believe the stress of finding a vet who will even help us while this is already awful. They added that their pet was snuggled up and sleeping next to them while they wrote the post, and they concluded by sharing: Try not to judge people too harshly is pretty much all I’ve got.
My unpopular opinion is that when it's time to put a pet down, it's time. Spending thousands of dollars on your pet's surgery is for you, not for THEM (who have no concept of life or death but do feel suffering).— dirtbag femme (@saelmasha) August 22, 2020
