Tom Hanks Reveals His Biggest Fear After His First Marriage With Samantha Lewes Ended

"I was sad, confused, emotionally crippled. I guess the house of cards has to fall in before you start to figure things out," said Tom Hanks.

Tom Hanks opened up about his state of mind when he divorced his first wife, Samantha Lewes, according to Mirror. The 64-year-old Forrest Gump actor was married to Lewes from 1978 to 1987. Hanks and Lewes have two children together, son Colin Hanks 42, and daughter Elizabeth Ann Hanks, 38. During the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast, Hanks revealed that his biggest fear was that his children would think he was "abandoning" them when he separated from Lewes. Besinger asked, "At the time you were in, I think, therapy three times a week. You said, 'I was sad, confused, emotionally crippled. I guess the house of cards has to fall in before you start to figure things out.' How so?"

"Well, I felt like I was a complete, abject, total failure and everything I thought was working was actually not working," replied Hanks. "It's a place that everybody comes to in their life for one reason or another." Hanks is now married to Rita Wilson, and the couple share sons Chet, 30, and Truman, 24. However, the divorce from Lewes wasn't so easy on him at the time, he adds: "I'd go off and talk to somebody and say, 'What... What have I done wrong?' And they would say, 'Well, what do you think you've done wrong?' 'Why am I so unhappy?' 'Well, tell me about your unhappiness'. And you work through that till you figure out that, you know, number one, you have been an idiot, but number two, you're no longer an idiot."

Hanks had experienced the damage a divorce could do to a child when his own parents had separated, but he had tried to make the best out of it. He kept moving schools and learned to love it. "I loved it. I kind of dug it. I like going into a new circumstance. I think I learned skills of, you know, sort of like seducing a room," Hanks said. "I never walked into a new social circumstance and felt clumsy or odd or, or shy." In 2002, sadly, Lewes bid farewell to the world. She died of bone cancer. While Lewes never dated anyone after their split, Hanks went on to marry Rita Wilson in 1988, a year after his divorce. According to Nickiswift, Hanks's son Colin referred to Wilson as the person his dad was "meant to be with."

When we reported about his marriage to Wilson that's lasted over three decades, Hanks revealed the secret behind his successful marriage. In a conversation with PEOPLE at the Outfest Legacy Awards in Los Angeles, Hanks said, “I wish there was a secret, you know. We just like each other. You start there.” The 59-year-old's advice was simple, “My secret to a happy marriage is just being married to the right woman. I got lucky with the wonderful Rita Wilson. I’m the luckiest man alive.” According to Epoch Times, “We laugh just as much now at two in the morning as we always have,” Hanks shared. Being married for thirty years and mutual support through thick and thin will definitely form an unbreakable partnership, one that can endure anything that life has to throw at them.
