It sure seems like a beautiful day in the neighborhood, all thanks to the beloved Tom Hanks. He's bringing back the late TV icon Mister Rogers to life. The first trailer for his new movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is out and excitement levels are pretty high. The movie is all about an article written by journalist Tom Junod (played by The Americans Emmy winner Matthew Rhys), that centered around TV star Fred Rogers and the subsequent friendship the two formed before Rogers’ death in 2003, according to People.
Rhys effortlessly portrays Junod, a jaded magazine reporter who is assigned to profile the children’s TV show host, and the movie follows him as he overcomes his skepticism and learns Rogers’ valued thoughts about empathy, kindness, and decency. The trailer starts off with Hanks singing Rogers’ iconic theme song with Rhys watching before they sit down and begin their interview.
“This piece will be for an issue about heroes. Do you consider yourself a hero?” Rhys, 44, challenges Hanks, 63, early on. “We are trying to give the world positive ways of dealing with their feelings,” Hanks says. “There are many things you can do. You can play all the lowest keys on the piano at the same time.” Later on in the trailer, Roger, Hanks' character says, "Sometimes we have to ask for help, and that’s okay. I think the best thing we can do is to let people know that each one of them is precious.”
Rogers, the star of the beloved, long-running children’s series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, was the main subject for the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year and was a huge hit at the summer box office. Director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) recently clarified what the movie would be about, explaining that it won’t be a biopic.
“[This] movie is…. not a biopic,” the filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly. “I disliked that when it got announced it was characterized as such. It’s really not. It’s a movie that’s largely focused on a reporter and [Mr. Rogers’] relationship to his life, and how [the reporter’s] whole world changes when coming in contact with Fred Rogers.” A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood will be screened in theaters on Nov. 22.
This seemed to be good news to fans of the franchise and the actor alike. Kelly Harrison Beckstrand commented: I love Mr. Rogers and Tom Hanks. I am already emotional just seeing the trailer. I'm looking forward to watching this. Caitlin Chapman seemed to think that there's no better fit for this role thank Tom Hanks: I’ve been scrolling past this all day and I just realized that it is Tom Hanks in the picture and not Mr. Rogers. They look so much alike!!!
Chantelle Grey added: I just got done watching the movie trailer for it and I think it's going to be a wonderful movie. You can tell Tom Hanks put a lot of effort into becoming Mr. Rodger. You can definitely tell it's going to be a very emotional film I started to tear up at the end of it. I believe Tom Hanks is going to make us all very happy and very proud he had some big shoes to fill and I think he successfully did it. It's definitely a movie I am taking my kids to see I want them to understand the kindness that Mr. Rogers tried teaching all of us.
