As Trump said, Woods has overcome a lot just to get to this point. He's recovered from a lot of personal issues, and all four surgeries to his back and knee to claim his 15th major and 81st overall PGA Tour victory.
Even as he's preparing for an upcoming tournament, Tiger Woods will be going to Washington D.C. with one of his golfing partners next week to see President Donald Trump at the White House and receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, according to The Washington Post. The Golfer will receive one of the nation's highest civilian awards in a Rose Garden ceremony just 10 days before the PGA Championship. This will be his second major tournament of the season which he will be attempting to win! Trump and Woods have been golf and business partners for a long time. Trump took to Twitter to share the news of Woods receiving the Medal of Freedom soon after he won the Masters last month, which was one of his greatest comebacks.
Trump was watching Woods win his fifth Masters and he couldn't contain his excitement and tweeted the next day he would be presenting the golfer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump tweeted: Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM! Woods will join fellow golfers Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Charles Sifford as Medal of Freedom recipients.
The White House usually does not confirm that the President is golfing but in February, Woods golfed with Trump and Jack Nicklaus and the President shared a picture of them on Twitter. This grouping was quite special and reporters were also allowed inside the club. The Trump Organization added that Woods and Nicklaus (who have endorsed Trump for president) have designed the courses for the company. Woods also lives quite close to Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach.
For some athletes, their friendship with the President has been quite tricky, and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady discovered that when he found a 'Make America Great Again' hat in his locker in September 2015. Brady said he's been longtime friends and golfing partners with Trump, but emphasized that "it's just a friendship." Brady stayed away in 2017 when the Patriots won the Super Bowl and visited the White House after their win.
Woods, too, like Brady, said their friendship predates the 2016 Presidential elections. “We’ve played golf together. We’ve had dinner together. I’ve known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency,” Woods said last summer at the Northern Trust. Based on their friendship, Woods was also asked what he thought of the Immigration policy, and he drew a line between the President and the presidency.
“He’s the president of the United States. You have to respect the office,” he said. “No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office.” That discretion earned praise from Trump, and he tweeted: The Fake News Media worked hard to get Tiger Woods to say something that he didn’t want to say. Tiger wouldn’t play the game — he is very smart. More importantly, he is playing great golf again!
Since winning the Masters, Woods has really been keeping a low profile. “I don’t mind telling you I’m really sore,” the 43-year-old golfer said immediately after the Masters. “I definitely won’t be touching a golf club [Monday].” It's also very important that he has some time for himself to recover since there is not a lot of time in between the majors, as the PGA Championship was moved from August to May. He's also got the U.S. Open in June. The PGA will take place on the Bethpage Black course on Long Island, and Woods will play in a threesome with Brooks Koepka and Francesco Molinari for the first two days.
This keeps with the tradition of teaming the winners of the past three majors. Woods and Molinari were paired in the final group at the Masters and played together at last year’s British Open, which Molinari won by two strokes. As Trump said, Woods has overcome a lot just to get to this point. He's recovered from a lot of personal issues, and all four surgeries to his back and knee to claim his 15th major and 81st overall PGA Tour victory. The President had predicted Woods would win majors again and this comeback delighted the President.
After the round in February, an excited Trump tweeted: Everyone is asking how Tiger played yesterday. The answer is Great! He was long, straight & putted fantastically well. He shot a 64. Tiger is back & will be winning Majors again! Not surprisingly, Jack also played really well. His putting is amazing! Jack & Tiger like each other.
