The advert shows how the boy spends his entire day at the store having fun, and as it fades out, the boy grows up to be a man and the commercial ends with the message: "Be a kid this Christmas."
This commercial shows that one doesn't have to spend a fortune to bring a smile on someone's face. Come Christmas, companies set aside big budgets for their annual holiday commercial. This year, a family-made ad, starring a hardware store owner's 2-year-old son, has stolen hearts all over the internet. The best part about it is that it cost just $130 to produce, reports CNN. Tom Jones, owner of a hardware store is passionate about making ads and he's been doing so for the past three years and posting them on social media. For this year's commercial, Jones, who runs the family-owned Haford Hardware store in Rhayader, cast his 2-year-old son Arthur, who follows him as he helps out in the store in the holidays.
The ad was shared on social media on Sunday and has been watched 49,000 times on YouTube, 3,000 times on Facebook and liked 1,500 times on Twitter since. "We've had a great response these last two years, but nothing like this year. It's just been crazy," Jones told CNN. "We just make it for fun, really. We try and put a bit of a spotlight on small independent businesses that you get in rural areas where we are, and we try and show that we can offer just as much as your high street chains," he added.
Jones sought help from his best friend Josh Holdaway to film the advertisement. The two of them shot and edited the film in just a day and they spent only £100 ($130) on the video. They spent the money on a recording studio and sound engineer for the ad's soundtrack, which is a dreamy version of Alphaville's 1984 hit Forever Young. "Arthur was brilliant -- the jobs he was doing in the video were not out of the ordinary," Jones told CNN.
"He comes to the shop most days and tries to help out," Jones said he was delighted with the reaction to the film. "I'm going to cherish it for the rest of my life," he added. The advertisement shows baby Arthur doing everything in the shop, from cleaning to arranging and even helping customers out. One particular scene is just too adorable where he gift wraps something. It's shabby but so adorable. Also, there is a moment when he takes a break from all the work and reads to his stuffed toys aligned perfectly with the paint containers.
Rob Collett took to Facebook to say: "Hafod Hardware I'll be honest, I'm an absolute scrouge but this is by far the best advert I have ever seen and has made my Christmas. Tom, being a father of a little lad of similar age to Arthur you must be so proud, he's a dude for sure! this is what Christmas is about and your advert hit right to the point. wishing a happy Christmas to Arthur and family..." Jo Lowe added: "Absolutely fabulous, well done another great Christmas advertisement who needs John Lewis when you got Hafod."
