The company's purpose was to "design movement back into our daily work even as our computers gobble up more and more of our physical effort."
There's an odd comfort that comes from sitting cross-legged, and that's probably why most of us prefer to sit that way. The only thing that's quite disappointing is that your feet start to go numb because blood flow's been restricted to that area. This is why an American company began making chairs to help people sit cross-legged in a comfortable and relaxing way. This unique piece of furniture features a top perch that can be adjusted to one's desired height, a lower platform where you can fold or cross your legs and still maintain optimum blood flow.
The website's description of the chair, called Soul Seat, reads: Our purpose is to design movement back into our daily work even as our computers gobble up more and more of our physical effort. Our chairs and floor desks are designed to help computer engineers stay active even as their coding makes wires evaporate into the cloud. Our furniture allows the student, the accountant, the videographer to move their legs and pelvis while their attention remains riveted to the monitor. We also want to see our health leverage the cloud by having the workplace be as flexible as our networks. We want to make it as easy to move tasks to the floor, and back to a table, and then on to a standing position as easily as possible.
Basically, frustration and not being comfortable led to the invention of this masterpiece. Designer and founder, Pack Matthews, was frustrated with how conventional ergonomic chairs left him in pain and offered no options for changing position while working at the computer, the company’s website reads. Collaborating with friends, a physical therapist, yoga instructors, fine woodworkers, and industrial engineers, Pack developed Health by Design’s first product, the Soul Seat.
Be warned, these chairs don't really come cheap—the regular Soul Seat is priced at $975. The floor model variety retails at $575 while the Bamboo Soul Seat goes for $1,200. The thing is, there is a lot of advantage to sitting cross-legged. Several Asian countries sit and consume meals cross-legged and on the floor because as much as it is a part of their culture, it is also beneficial in several ways.
Several households don't really have dining tables or stools. Instead, they all gather on the floor and eat meals together. Did you know that sitting in this position actually aids digestion? While it also keeps you flexible and increases blood circulation, it also increases your life expectancy. Also, your knees and hips get some movement and remain healthy. It also keeps your mind and body at peace. Yes, it's also a yoga position and with good reason. Now, if the prices were telling you not to buy them, maybe these benefits will convince you to do otherwise.
