For Phyllis Pena, a Texan mom, nothing is more important than the safety of her children.
When a Texas mom spotted a man peeping through her 15-year-old daughter's bedroom window, there was no stopping her. Phyllis Pena, a mom from Lake Jackson, Texas, had just arrived home from the store at around 7 a.m. when she noticed a man peering through the window of her daughter's bedroom, reports Click2Houston News. Thankfully, her daughter was not in the room at that time. Without missing a beat, Pena informed the authorities but as soon as they arrived at the scene, the suspect tried to flee. That's when the mom jumped into action.
Footage shows Pena artfully tackling a man to the ground as he attempts to speed past her. He might have even escaped if it wasn't for the furious mom who was determined to catch the perverted man. "First instinct was just to make sure he didn’t go any further," she explained. "I figured it’s the least I could do if I got him down, tripped him down, whatever, then they could just catch up." The suspect was later identified as 19-year-old Zane Hawkins, who began running towards the mom after escaping the police. But Pena was all set to tackle him and she could be seen in the video using agile footwork to square herself before charging at him like a bull.
@HoustonTexans should sign her, might be an improvement...— Tony2all2 (@Tony2all2) February 12, 2021
She makes sure to hold him strongly as they go down together. Pena's daughter is then seen helping her mom out to take the suspect down. They keep him restrained until the cops catch up to them. Like everyone who has watched this clip, officers at the scene too were seriously impressed with Pena's take-down. "The cop fist-bumped me and he was like, 'Hey, so I heard the Texans are looking for a new linebacker,'" she recalled to the outlet before breaking into giggles. Jokes apart, the mom did what she had to do in order to ensure her children's safety. "My kids are my life and just making sure I protect them," she shared.
Sergeant Roy Welch revealed that Hawkins was booked into jail after being arrested. He now faces charges of Possession of a controlled substance, evading arrest, resisting arrest. Welch said that more charges could be added later. Speaking of Pena's brave actions, he continued, "It’s not very often that we have somebody that actually steps in, puts themself in harm’s way to assist in apprehending somebody." Pena shared that her kids did know of the suspect but did not know him personally.
The heroic moment was captured by a dashcam of a police car that had been called to the scene. It instantly became viral after the police department shared the clip on social media. When word reached on Twitter, people began reacting with words of praise for the fearless mom. I'm not Lance but as a db coach I can tell you she understood her leverage and used the 12th man(sideline err i mean car) to perfection, wrote user Don Kabel. User Priceless Opinion shared: Boom...Somebody sign this woman up!! She has MAD TACKLING SKILLS!! @dallascowboys Draft!! Just sayin.’ Even Jeff Nguyen, a reporter for CBS2 and KCAL9 responded to the clip writing: Much respect for her technique!!
Although the mom's actions were quite courageous, it goes without saying that she was lucky enough to come out of the situation unharmed. If Hawkins had a weapon with him as most predators do, Pena could have been seriously injured, especially given the force with which she tackled him. Thus, in such situations, it is always wise to let the police do their job no matter how badly you want to get involved in the matter.
