'Sweet Home Alabama' Star Josh Lucas Hints At A Sequel With Reese Witherspoon

The 48-year-old star even revealed a possible plotline for the sequel and it's not what you were expecting.

Who doesn't love their fair share of romantic flicks? It's definitely a genre that we all love to binge-watch with our loved ones. And somehow watching those old cute films gives us a nostalgic tingling that we just cannot get enough of! I don't know anyone can get bored of watching movies like Titanic, The Notebook, Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, A Walk to Remember, among several others. This often gets us thinking about how amazing it really would be if they were to make a sequel. Given the rate at which sequels have been popping up, it's not an impossibility.

In a recent report by ET Online, Josh Lucas has teased the fans about his interest in assuming his role as Jake Perry in the 2002 flick Sweet Home Alabama. Lucas starred opposite the gorgeous and talented Reese Witherspoon, who played the lead role of Melanie. Speaking to ET's Nischelle Turner, the 48-year-old actor, who was attending the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual grants banquet, expressed how much he would love to share the screen with the 43-year-old actress and reprise the role.

"I'm up for it. I know Reese's said she is as well," said Lucas. He then went on to reveal how even the director of the film seems to be ready for another installment. "The director [Andy Tennant] is absolutely up for it. I spoke to him about it a couple of times recently. So look, I throw it out to you, Reese," he said. Lucas was careful to mention that it was completely up to the Big Little Lies star. "I think the person who’s the one to put it together is Reese, so I’m hoping. Who knows? She’s got a lot of irons in the fire, to say the least. Hopefully, this is one of them," said Lucas.

Of course, this was enough to make fans go crazy with excitement. One Twitter user @tamibell87 wrote: One of my all time favorites!!!! I literally stop and watch every single time I see it's on (heart). Another fan, @gjrecinos1 wrote: This is my favorite romance movie I’m so up for this! However, @WallaceTRACY11 urged the actors to only go through with this if they had a good script. The comment read: @WallaceDaphne @ReeseW Don’t do it unless you have a good script. It’s my favorite movie. Others wrote: This would be SO amazing!!!  And another: Please please please do this!!! And yet another one: This has to happen!!!

Although fans seem to be totally ready for the next installment, Witherspoon had a contrasting notion about it. Back in 2016, the actress participated in a Facebook Live Q&A according to PEOPLE. During this, she mentioned how she would be more than happy to relive her role of Melanie onscreen. "We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to make a sequel they can just call me. I would happily make Sweet Home Alabama 2," she said. The first time Lucas revealed that he had actually spoken to the writer and director, Andy Tennant, at length about a possible sequel was back in April this year.

"I’ve absolutely said yes," revealed Lucas on Good Morning America. "He [Andy Tennant] and I discussed it extensively, so we’re lobbying the world to join us." I'm sure you're wondering what the iconic couple Jake and Melanie's relationship would be right now following their happily ever after fate in the original movie. Lucas shared some detail regarding this as well, "The proposal that Andy Tennant — the director — had, which was quite interesting, is that my character is back in Alabama." He continued, "and Reese’s character is in New York with our kids and we’re divorced, so [their] whole life is super complicated."

"And Patrick Dempsey‘s character is still in the picture," continued the 48-year-old with a laugh. If you guys remember, Dempsey played the character of Melanie's would-be husband in the film who she eventually leaves after releasing that she is still in love with Jake. "But that’s just a proposal," added Lucas.
