Steel Magnolias Will Return To Theatres THIS WEEKEND For 30th Anniversary Celebrations

The movie will be screened at 4 pm or 7 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2019; 7 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2019; and 7 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.

This weekend is going to be a special one, especially because a story about the celebration of friendship, dedication, and resiliency amongst a small-town group of strong-as-steel women is returning to theaters nationwide beginning Sunday, May 19, according to 9 News. Steel Magnolias is returning to theatres this weekend because they're turning 30! It has been three decades since Shelby, M'Lynn, Truvy, Annelle, Clairee, and Ouiser stole our hearts for the first time and now they are headed back for the big screen again.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie, Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) are teaming up to return the much-loved movie for three days only, so it's time to make some plans immediately to make sure you don't miss out on the special weekend. It's best spent with your friends! Fathom Events and TCM are re-releasing classic movies in theaters, and the list includes some of the classics like The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Ben-Hur, and more.

Vice President of Studio Relations of Fathom Events, Tom Lucas told Southern Living, "Every year, more and more film fans have flocked to the TCM Big Screen Classics series, proving the lasting appeal of these movies and the thrill of seeing them in a movie theater. From spectacular musicals and grand Westerns to epic adventures, we are tremendously proud of this year’s lineup and our continuing partnership with TCM."

The movie first came out in 1989 and it had a lot of positive reviews. Popular critic Roger Ebert reviewed the film as, "willing to sacrifice its over-all impact for individual moments of humor, and while that leaves us without much to take home, you've got to hand it to them: The moments work." On Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, the movie has been given a 70 percent rating. That, as we all know, is quite a big deal!

The film opened and in style! It was at number four and managed to garner a weekend gross of $5,425,440. Gradually, these numbers grew and overall domestically, the movie grossed $83,759,091 and stayed in the top 10 for 16 weeks. In terms of worldwide numbers, the film fetched $95,904,091. The synopsis of the movie is: Six women come together in this hilarious and heartwarming story of life, love, and loss in a small Louisiana parish.

At the center of the group is Shelby Eatenton, newly married and joyfully pregnant, despite the fact that her diabetes could make childbirth life-threatening. Terrified and angry at the possibility of losing her only daughter, M'Lynn Eatenton looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fear of death in order to join Shelby in celebrating the miracle of new life.

Julia Roberts plays the character of Shelby and it is actually inspired by a real-life death. The movie is actually adapted from the 1987 play of the same name that was written by Robert Hartling. It has been reported that Hartling wrote the play as a way to cope with the death of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson. Robinson passed away in 1985 due to complications from Type 1 diabetes. In the play, he chose to change the name of his sister from Susan to Shelby.

There is also a meaning behind the title Steel Magnolias. It personifies the main female characters being tough as steel whilst being delicate like the magnolia flower. The movie will be screened at 4 pm or 7 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2019; 7 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2019; and 7 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. You could also purchase the tickets from the Fathom Events Website if the theaters near your area are playing the movie.
