The 18-year-old daughter of former President Barack Obama was seen attending freshman orientation at the Ann Arbor school this week before classes begin next Tuesday.
There are always publicity scares and security concerns when sons and daughters of wealthy or high-profile individuals join a public school or organization. The hype behind their families and personalities is always going to be a hot topic for discussion amongst peers and management staff alike. However, most of them try to adapt to the general vibe as best they can and sort of mingle with the rest of the students/employees and go about their business normally.
18-year-old Sasha Obama, daughter of former POTUS Barack Obama, will be reportedly starting her college at the University of Michigan (UM) next week. Reports from Detriot News say that she is already at the campus settling in. The outlet said that Obama's youngest daughter was seen attending freshman orientation at the Ann Arbor school this week before classes begin next Tuesday.
I hope Sasha Obama will get the privacy she deserves and the freedom to be a college student while at UofM.— baby o✨ (@OumieHawa_) August 29, 2019
So is Sasha going to blend in well or stick out like a sore thumb due to her family's profile? Well, for one thing, she was seen by several students attending the same summer freshman orientation to be accompanied by men who are believed to be Secret Service agents.
"I was walking by pushing a vacuum and she walked out right in front of me," said Zach Lassen, a third-year film student from Redford. "I said, 'Excuse me.' It was a crowded hallway with her and some Secret Service dudes." That's hardly surprising knowing who she is, but would that actually work against her favor as she tries to not let her 'celebrity' status get in the way of her education. Also, another student at the college who saw Sasha around the university’s undergraduate library said that she looked just like "a normal student to me."
Now listen folks at UofM, if you see Sasha Obama at a party leave her be and don’t go posting her having fun all over social media. Poor Malia has to deal with that, let the girl live.— andrea (@andreabair_6) August 29, 2019
When inquired if Sasha had indeed enrolled at UM or not, a spokesman for the university, Rick Fitzgerald, said that "We cannot confirm the enrollment of any student," he said. "Classes do not start until next week, and we are weeks away from official enrollment information."
Sasha's friends and family, however, got to know that she would be enrolling herself at the University of Michigan after an Instagram post reportedly from her private account. The post had her posing with two friends with a caption that read, "So proud to say I’m going to college with my sisters!!" with the university being tagged on the post as well.
Sasha Obama could probably have gone *anywhere* she wanted for college. She chose Maize & Blue. Very cool. #GoBlue— Kumar Rao (@KumarRaoNYC) August 29, 2019

Her father, Barack, attended Columbia University before studying law at Harvard. Her mother Michelle went to Princeton before joining Barack at Harvard. Sasha's older sister Malia also enrolled at Harvard a couple of years ago before deciding to take a gap year.
Malia will be returning to start her third year at Harvard in the fall as Sasha starts her freshman year at Michigan. Sasha graduated from the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC in June and had her whole family cheering her on. The Obamas had stayed back in Washington after former president Barack left the office for Sasha to finish high school.
