A restaurant worker in Miami says he quit his job after the owner gave their blackened chicken wings a really offensive name, according to The New York Post. Brandon Gonzalez, a 25-year-old bar back, said he was bringing out a plate of the wings last week at Hole in the Wall Pub when he noticed the name on the token. It read "I can't breathe' printed under the order, according to Miami NewsTimes. “I initially brushed it off as a mistake, but the owner came into the kitchen and mentioned the joke to the kitchen workers,” Gonzalez told the outlet, adding that the owner revealed he had put the phrase into the ordering machine as a joke.

"He's like, hey, we’re not gonna write blackened anymore, we’re gonna write, 'I can’t breathe' and he started laughing, and I stayed quiet," Gonzalez said, according to NBC Miami. Gonzalez, who has been working at three of the pub's outlets for a while, resigned right after his shift was over that day. "There's one main reason what absolutely offended me and baffled me, and it was the fact that they have a 90% Black kitchen," he said. “We’ve been talking about this whole movement ever since George Floyd was murdered,” he added. “You don’t make a joke about the movement when most of your kitchen staff is Black. I felt like ignoring this would be disrespectful to my friends and everyone who is part of the movement.”

When he quit, Gonzalez took the order ticket with him and posted a photo of it to Twitter.  He wrote: Yesterday I was at work and my boss, hole in the wall co-founder Sam, thought it’d be funny to change the “Blackened” wings to “I Can’t Breathe”. Attention miami locals do not support this disgusting establishment. I quit today. #BlackLivesMatter. "You're pretty much joking about the BLM movement," Gonzalez said. "You think it's a joke that George Floyd was saying 'I can't breathe' an x amount of times, like, you think that's funny? That’s not funny." The owner reportedly apologized in a social media post, “I want to apologize for my insensitivity in a lame attempt at humor. My intentions were never to offend or make any employee or customer uncomfortable."

He went on to add that he hopes to learn from this incident and that he's truly sorry. "I think that joke came from a place where you wouldn’t find things like that funny unless you were a racist, to be honest," Gonzalez said, "I just think the problem is deeper than that. It’s not just, 'I’m sorry, my bad.'" An apology was out on the official website as well: The management of 'Hole in the Wall Pub' is disgusted about what occurred. We apologize to our customers and employees. It is reprehensible and goes completely against our values. We have taken immediate action by suspending Mr Diedrick. We will be engaging directly with each of our employees to listen to their concerns and explain to them the steps we are taking to ensure this never occurs again.
