The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier this week and Rami Malek received his first ever nomination. 'Roma' and 'The Favorite' lead with 10 nominations.
It's almost time for the biggest, most prestigious award ceremony in the world (for everyone in the film industry, of course) and the list of nominations were announced on January 22, earlier this week. 'The Favorite' and 'Roma' lead the nominations after being shortlisted for awards in ten different categories each. However, the fans are still rooting on 'Bohemian Rhapsody' which has got five nominations of its own. Actor Rami Malek, who has been recognized for his outstanding performance in the movie, is among one of the fan favorite to win the Best Actor award. This is his first ever Oscar nomination and he couldn't be more excited and emotional about it (for good reason though).
The biopic on Queen has been nominated in five different categories - Best Actor (Rami Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and, Best Sound Editing. When the news of the nominations came out, the actor was in Paris. In an interview with EW he said, “I didn’t realize it was today, because I try never to ask anybody when these moments are,” He continued “I thought about his upheaval of an upbringing — this conflicted man getting to London as a young adult,”. He further added, “What a brand-new world to be thrust into — not knowing exactly how you fit in or how to identify yourself. All that conflict inside was just brewing into a powder keg that was ready to explode.”

Queen guitarist Brian May took to social media to show his support for Rami Malek. He claims that he knew all along that the 37-year-old actor would be nominated for the Best Actor award. He wrote, "He’s incredible… without doubt, he’ll be on the nominations list for an Oscar and well deserved as well. He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable. We’ve lived with this project for nine years and it’s incredible to see it doing so well." He further added, "It came out to s***ty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently. Everybody gave 200%, from the actors and technicians to the production team and hair and makeup, everyone."

The actor might have bagged the Golden Globes but is well aware of the fact that he again faces some serious competition at the Oscars. The other nominees for the Best Actor Award at the Oscars are Christian Bale for Vice, Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Willem Dafoe for At Eternity’s Gate, and Viggo Mortensen for Green Book. Since Rami Malek won the award at the Golden Globes, fans are sure that he has a good chance of winning the Oscar. During the interview with EW, the actor said, "I’m in Paris working…. Then the telephone started fluttering away, and it’s a beautiful snowy day, so there’s something quite magical the way it’s happening. It’s just something you never expect to happen. It’s like a distant dream that actors have and hope for to some degree. But it’s never really felt in the realm of possibilities — it’s a pretty joyous occasion, to say the least." Regarding the time he first knew that he was nominated. He explained that he wasn't carried away at all even after the nomination.

Rami Malek's year started on a high after he won the Best Actor Award at the Golden Globes and was nominated for the Oscar earlier this week but he says that this has not changed the way he is and the way he works at all. He said that he continues to be a hard-working actor. Of course, the more opportunities are going to start flowing in now but he still remains grounded. Well, now the title of being an "Oscar-nominated" actor is going to stick around forever (until he wins one in his career). Regarding this, he said, "there’s something about hearing the words that you’re an Oscar-nominated actor that is still going to be incredibly shocking. It’s a profoundly humbling moment for me."
"Yeah, you can’t take that away. I’ve got to thank the Academy for that, being in the cream of the crop — and such phenomenal performances this year I’m being considered with. And this film did so well, we’re the Best Picture nominee. I’m just so proud of the work on this [movie]," he added. He concluded saying, "I want to celebrate this award nomination with the cast and the crew and everybody that worked so hard on this." The Oscars will be held on February 24 and guess we will all just have to wait for an entire month to see if he manages to bag this one too.
