May Day! May Day! Passenger Opens Emergency Exit On Plane, Mistaking It For Toilet!

A spokesperson for the airline said the incident occurred because someone mistook the emergency exit to be the bathroom. All passengers were safely offloaded from the plane.

Traveling on a flight can be quite scary if it's your first time because it has a lot of buttons and handles that we don't know does what, and a passenger caused a major delay in a flight after mistaking an airplane's emergency exit for a bathroom door, on Friday. The plane was still on the tarmac in Manchester, U.K. at the time of the incident, and it was getting ready to take-off to Pakistan, but suffered a seven-hour-delay, according to the airline, reports CNN. Forty passengers of PIA 702 were offloaded following the incident, during which "the exit slide deployed automatically," Pakistan International Airlines said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the airline said the incident occurred because someone mistook the emergency exit to be the bathroom. All passengers were safely offloaded from the plane. This, surprisingly, is not the first time that such an incident has happened. In October 2018, a first-time flyer in his mid-20s on a GoAir flight wanted to use the restroom. However, instead of finding his way to the toilet, he mistook the emergency exit in the back of the plane for the lavatory.

According to a report from L’Agence France-Presse (AFP), the man attempted to open the emergency exit, and as soon as he tried to do so, it sparked an alarm and he was apprehended by crew members on board. Similarly, last month, an elderly passenger was detained and ultimately arrested in China for “endangering the safety of an aircraft” after they attempted to open an emergency door while the plane was grounded.

We all know how irritating it can get when we get shoved around by impatient people who just can't seem to wait for their turn to get out of their seats and deplane. The elderly, only identified by his surname, Song, was apparently trying to beat the line to deplane, and so he simply opened the emergency exit door by his seat once the plane had landed because he probably thought that was easier than having to wait in line.

People weren't really sympathetic about the mistake that was made that caused the 7-hour-delay. Kim Raymond commented: You can’t “mistake” an emergency exit as a bathroom door. Those doors have signs written all over them stating in big red lettering “emergency exit ONLY”. That’s just plain stupidity. Cathy Agnew added: How do you mistake an emergency exit door for a bathroom door???? Totally different, must be an ignorant flyer. I don’t fly much but even I know the difference.

Tricia Victoria saw a funny side to it: hahahah I can't imagine how embarrassing this would be. Literally though, if someone I knew did this they would never live it down.  it would be like "hey bill. remember that time you deployed the emergency exit on a plane?" at every social or family function. Emalee Steel Hayes commented: Wow... sounds like that one needs to stick to the rails. Heather Tucker wrote: seriously was this person just illiterate or just plain stupid and cannot read.

Brenda Rice Gross added: The stupidity of some people is truly astounding. And scary when you think about them being in society amongst the rest of us. In their defense, maybe the person did make an honest mistake, as they did not know what they were supposed to do or they were not informed properly. Mistakes do happen, but this was a costly one, and probably a lesson to everyone because time is money.
