A police investigation was launched against the baby's family after a man, claiming to be the baby's grandfather, told them the baby had "stopped breathing" and had a serious lung infection.
A newborn baby was found buried alive after his family thought he had died. According to Daily Mail, a group of villagers dug up the abandoned newborn baby boy who was buried alive in a cardboard box in eastern China. Jiao Xinglu and Zhou Shangdong were searching for mushrooms in the hilly areas near Laiwu, in east China’s Shandong Province, when they discovered the baby on August 21. Xinglu apparently heard a noised that sounded similar to a dog's bark, and the ground seemed a little unsettled from where the noise came from. So he decided to dig around and see where the noise was coming from.
A video that was shared shows Xinglu digging at the soil with his bare hands because the "crying grew faint and eventually stopped altogether." By this time, more family and friends gathered around. He stumbled upon the cardboard box and when he opened it he was shocked to discover what was inside the box. It revealed a sleeping baby boy who weighed a mere 3.4 lbs.

The baby's family allegedly thought the baby had died the day after he was born because he was struggling with a serious lung infection. However, once the box was discovered, a woman came forward to take a look. While bystanders tried to make sense of the situation, she unwrapped the blanket to reveal a small baby resting.
This is attempted infantcide but after getting caught give a real lame excuse.— Sixtus Maximus (@GWietrzychowski) October 21, 2019
The camera then focussed on the baby's face and it seemed as if his eyes were flickering. The newborn's arm began to move and the woman gently pressed the baby as she was trying to check its warmth and movement. They then wrapped the blanket back around his tiny body. The baby was rushed to the hospital where the doctors said that he was suffering from anemia and jaundice, and was transferred to the Second Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital of Shandong’s provincial capital of Jinan for treatment.
Thankfully, the baby had no congenital conditions and has since recovered to a healthy 8.8 lbs. A police investigation was launched against the baby's family after a man, claiming to be the baby's grandfather, told them the baby had "stopped breathing" and had a serious lung infection. Hearing about this on the local news, Liu showed up at the Tai’an’s Yangliu Police Station after the police announced they were trying to track the family down, three days later.
The supposed grandfather stated that the little baby boy was unable to breathe on his own, and required him to be dependant on a respiratory machine. Liu told Asia Wire. "He died on the second day [after he was born]. He couldn’t drink or eat. After he died, we buried him," whilst adding that he "can't stop thinking about [the baby]." The woman who approached the baby and is a mom to two children herself has volunteered to adopt the baby if no one came forward to claim him. But since the grandfather has stepped in, it remains unclear if the claim still stands.
