Cardi B Thanked Tom Petty For Sending Flowers After Grammy Win, Except He Died in 2017

Cardi B won her first ever Grammy and received a bouquet of flowers to celebrate her win. She made a major mistake about who the sender could be, sending Twitter riling.

The 61st GRAMMYs was a big night for Bodak Yellow artist Cardi B. Not only was she nominated for five different awards, including Best Rap Album, Best Album, Best Record, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Rap Performance, she won her very first GRAMMY for Best Rap Album. This is a considerable accomplishment as this makes Cardi B the first solo woman to win the award. During her acceptance speech, she chose to thank her daughter, stating, "I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. It’s because, you know, when I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete, like three songs that I was for sure having. And then you know, you know how it was, we was like, we have to get this album done so I could still do videos while I’m still not showing. And it was very long nights.” Undoubtedly, emotions were running high for the rapper.

After her big win, she was celebrating her night when she was congratulated with a gorgeous arrangement of flowers. The beautiful bouquet was accompanied by a short and sweet note that read, "You’ve got a big heart. So big it could crush this town." These are the unforgettable lyrics from Tom Petty's iconic song, Walls (Circus), released in 1996. In a since-deleted video on her Instagram story, she thanked the artist for the arrangement, assuming he had sent the flowers to her.

In the video, she is heard exclaiming, "Thank you, Tom Petty, for the flowers. I left the room, but, um, the flowers were very big. I want to say thank you so much, and this is such a beautiful note. Motherf***ers love me, bro." As adorable as this was, it appears the Cardi B is unaware that Petty, unfortunately, passed away two years ago in 2017. The Free Fallin' singer was found unconscious at his home, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest, early in the morning of Monday, October 2, 2017.

And, of course, the internet being the internet, everyone decided to have a go at the artist for her slip-up. Many took to social media platform Twitter to voice their opinions. Twitter user Socmediaisdumb posted, "I’m kinda pissed at Cardi B because she didn’t know we lost Tom Petty a year and a half ago. Those were just his lyrics for the song Walls. Every self-respecting musician should know about a great like Tom Petty." Well, this user definitely has a valid point. But some had an interesting theory...

Many users went on to accuse Cardi B's rap rival, Nicki Minaj, of gifting her the bouquet with the lyrics in order to sabotage the Girls Like You feature artist. However, in response to this theory, DelaneyHayden1 said, "I doubt it. Cardi B is just totally stupid and this proves it beyond a doubt. How can you possibly be considered a musician if you don't know Tom Petty is dead?" Others were kinder, giving her the benefit of the doubt. "How many 20-something-year-old, pretty young women would know who Tom Petty is? Really?" Asked Mominleftfield. (Okay, that was fairly condescending to women, but still.)

Some believed that the flowers may have come from fellow artist and convicted domestic abuser Chris Brown as he had posted (again) a since-deleted Instagram caption that appeared to suggest he wanted to send flowers to the rapper. Brown had written, "Ima send ya girl flowers so she know I respect her." This, however, may just be a huge coincidence. After this incident took place, Cardi B also deleted her Instagram profile entirely. Some believe this may be why, though her last video uploaded to the social media site implied otherwise.

Allegedly, she had received a lot of backlash for her Grammy win. She explained, “I remember last year when I didn’t win for Bodak Yellow, everybody was like, 'Cardi got snubbed, Cardi got snubbed.' Now this year’s a f*cking problem? My album went two-time platinum, my n*gga. And every chart that there was my album was always top 10. Number one album as well. I f*cking worked my ass off, locked myself in the studio for three months, my n*gga, then went to sleep in my own bed, sometimes for four days straight, pregnant. Some songs couldn’t even get on the f*cking album because my nose was so f*cking stuffy from my pregnancy. N*ggas couldn’t sleep, n*ggas couldn’t do sh*t.”
