While auditioning for the 1989 comedy The Experts, Preston, 56, met her a charming Travolta, 65, reports US Weekly. "She came in this, this gorgeous woman. We had an immediate chemistry," he said during an interview with the outlet. However, both were with other people at the time. Travolta was dating TV star Marilu Henner and Preston was married to fellow actor Kevin Gage reports Fame 10. Despite knowing about her marital status, the Oscar-nominated actor himself struck up a conversation with her. "I remember she was going down the steps. And I was on top, and I said, ‘May I ask you a question?’ and she said, ‘Yes,’ and I said, ‘What’s it like to be married? Is it a good thing?’"

Travolta was completely surprised by her response. "She said, ‘I love it,’” and I thought, ‘Wow, wouldn’t it be great to be married to someone who loves being married?’" When The Last Song actress was asked about the same, she recalled, "I see, no lie, coming across the hall with his two dogs, this really hot guy. Then he stops and says hello. And I was like, ‘Oh s—t. Kill me now.’ You know, like, ‘Oh my God.’ And that was my first meeting with him." Little did the pair know that they were destined to be together.

Their relationship began when the two tied the knot in 1991 after dating for roughly a year and a half. Preston revealed the secret to their successful marriage. "I think that we were just right together, that we picked the right people and keeping it honest and communicating and checking in with each other. A relationship doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it. You’ve got to keep it fun and that’s what we do."

Crediting the healthy communication between the two for their long-lasting marriage, she said, "Communication is huge... Continue playing. People will let their marriage go but you have to have fun, play, have date night, you know, make it last." In addition, she shared how the couple "dance all the time" and cherishes every moment spent with their children  Ella, 18, and Benjamin, 7 (and of course, Jett who passed away 2009 at the age of 16). "We dance at home, we go dancing," said the 56-year-old actress about her fun dates nights with her husband.

She also noted that their children are one of the reasons why the couple share such a strong bond. "Our children keep our interest in life very high. Their future is very important to us," she added

"She is her own person. She is gracious, generous, poised, graceful and gorgeous. I don’t know how she came to be, and I don’t take any credit other than just adoring her," said Travolta during an interview with PEOPLE, "And maybe that’s a valid contribution."
