Kelly Preston "passed away following a two-year battle with breast cancer."
Kelly Preston, actor and wife of John Travolta, has died. She was 57. "On the morning of July 12, 2020, Kelly Preston, adored wife, and mother, passed away following a two-year battle with breast cancer," a family representative tells PEOPLE exclusively. "Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends," the family rep says. "She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched. Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time."
According to The Guardian, Travolta said she had been sick for two years, and thanked her doctors and friends for their support. Travolta took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news. He wrote: It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many. My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side.
Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered. I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while. But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal. All my love, JT. Preston leaves behind two children, daughter Ella, 20, and son, Benjamin, who is nine. Their son Jett died in January 2009, as we reported earlier. Jett was just 16 when he suffered a seizure while on a family vacation. Police say Jett hit his head on a bathtub, according to PEOPLE, and he was pronounced dead.
10 days after Jett's 6th death anniversary, Travolta shared a touching message on his Facebook page about how he and his wife have been coping with the loss. Someone you raised and watched grow every day. Someone you taught how to walk and talk. Someone you showed how to love. It's the worst thing to ever happen to anyone. He brought me so much joy. He was my everything. Those 16 years of being his father taught me how to love unconditionally. We have to stop and be thankful for our children and children should stop and be thankful for their parents. Because life is very short. Spend time with your parents and parents spend time with your children. Treat them well. Because, one day, when you look up from your phone, they won't be there anymore. What I truly learned most of all is, live and love every day like it's your last. Because, one day, it will be.
On September 5th, 2019, the couple celebrated their 28th anniversary together, as we reported earlier. To celebrate the occasion, Preston posted a cute picture of the two on her Instagram account. The heartfelt note to her husband read: To my dearest Johnny, the most wonderful man I know. You have given me hope when I have felt lost, loved me patiently and unconditionally… made me laugh harder than any other human being possible... shared the most beautiful highs and at times lows. She continued: You’re a dream Daddio and make life so much fun!! I trust my love with you implicitly... with you I know I will always be okay no matter what happens... I love you forever and completely. Happy 28th Anniversary @johntravolta 💕♥️🥰
And Travolta was quick to respond to it with a comment that read: I love you so much Kelly! Thank you for all your love and for being such a wonderful wife and mother @therealkellypreston. Their relationship began when the two tied the knot in 1991 after dating for roughly a year and a half. Preston revealed the secret to their successful marriage. "I think that we were just right together, that we picked the right people and keeping it honest and communicating and checking in with each other. A relationship doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it. You’ve got to keep it fun and that’s what we do."
Crediting the healthy communication between the two for their long-lasting marriage, she said, "Communication is huge... Continue playing. People will let their marriage go but you have to have fun, play, have date night, you know, make it last." In addition, she shared how the couple "dance all the time" and cherishes every moment spent with their children Ella, 18, and Benjamin, 7 (and of course, Jett who passed away 2009 at the age of 16). "We dance at home, we go dancing," said the 56-year-old actress about her fun dates nights with her husband. She also noted that their children are one of the reasons why the couple share such a strong bond. "Our children keep our interest in life very high. Their future is very important to us." May your soul rest in peace, Kelly.
