Chambers, who played the character Alex Karev on the show, was last seen on the 350th episode of the medical drama that aired on November 14, 2019.
It's a piece of news no Grey's Anatomy fan wants to hear—Justin Chambers, one of the original cast members of the hit drama, has left. In its 16th season, ABC's longest-running medical drama will lose one of its four remaining original cast members. Chambers's character Alex Karev was last seen on the show's 350th episode, which aired on November 14, 2019. The appearance in the November 14 episode was his final appearance on the show, and it doesn't seem like there will be a specific farewell episode. Fans are shocked that such an important character had to go in such a manner.
After 16 seasons on the show, Grey's Anatomy Star Justin Chambers has announced that he is leaving: "There's no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that's defined so much of my life for the past 15 years." https://t.co/yro2Ug25sN pic.twitter.com/TDz9SFvAvX— E! In a statement to Deadline, Chambers said, "There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.” Chambers played the role of Alex Karev on the show since the pilot aired back in 2005. Karev started an intern at the at Grace Hospital, before becoming a resident and then a pediatric surgical fellow. The character has gone through various transitions starting as a brusque character dismissive of his patients and co-workers. Karev is later well respected by all and gradually has become a fan favorite.
Chambers made sure he acknowledged the show's three remaining cast members—Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey; Chandra Wilson, who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey; and James Pickens Jr., who plays Dr. Richard Webber—as well as the ABC Studios, He also made sure he thanked show creator Shonda Rhimes. "As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride,” he said.
So shonda rhimes really thinks that justin chambers aka Alex Karev is just going to leave the show, just like that, when he has a whole story line going with running a whole hospital, something doesn’t sound right we the fans are are not buying it Shonda #GreysAnatomy pic.twitter.com/oy5YpecKu6— Ivette Rivera (@Indiaevie) January 11, 2020
In the show, Alex Karev has already been through two marriages and was fired from the hospital for his part in Meredith’s (Pompeo) insurance fraud. He was later hired as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Pacific Northwest General Hospital. In his last episode, Alex was last seen in Grey’s Anatomy leaving to take care of his sick mother. He was not present during the show's fall finale in November.
Fans of Chambers expressed their sadness at the news. Lisa Birge Crowe Haynes wrote: I'm so sad to hear this news. I have watched every minute of Grey's and loved Alex so much! It's just not going to be the same without you! Best wishes on your new journey! Another fan, Melissa Epworth wrote: While I wish him every success and happiness, we all should have the chance in life to follow our passions and dreams, I’m going to be sad and miss what he brings to world of Greys Anatomy
