There was a period of time when the mother and son had a non-existent relationship
Falling pregnant at 17 and having to raise a child all by yourself is no easy feat. Yet, that's exactly what Pattie Mallette went through. She had a rough childhood growing up, and having been sexually abused, she turned to drugs and alcohol in high school to cope with the trauma of being abused at the hands of a babysitter and a friend's grandfather. She also delved into that chapter of her life in her book Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom. She told TODAY, "I've learned it's normal and natural for anybody who's been through sexual abuse to carry that shame and that blame and feel like there's something wrong with you. So I definitely carried that." So heavy was that shame, that she even attempted to take her life. "It was a culmination built up over the years of the abuse and the pain. At the time I was messed up with drugs and alcohol and in a depression." According to Cosmopolitan, she met a Christian counselor, found faith, and turned her life around.

In a George Stroumboulopoulos interview, she said, "I had people talking to me about God saying God can help you. He showed up in a big way and that's just sort of what turned my perception of everything." It so happened that when she was pregnant with Justin, and she had no intention of going in for an abortion even though she knew she had that choice in front of her. She told TODAY, "I just knew I couldn’t. I just knew I had to keep him. But I just knew that I couldn't abort. I had to do my best, and I was determined to do whatever it took." She also raised her son to be connected to his spiritual side.
As Justin's fame skyrocketed, the teen sensation went from being one of the most popular artists in the world to one of the most hated persons. He engaged in some pretty self-destructive behavior that landed him in many scandals including public urination, egging a neighbor door, Brazillian brothels, and illegal pets. He was also arrested in Miami for a DUI, resisting arrest without violence, and driving with an expired license. His relationship with his mother also began to deteriorate, but they have since appeared to have made amends.
Speaking to US Weekly in 2015, Justin admitted that his relationship with her was "pretty non-existent". He said, "I was distant because I was ashamed. I never wanted my mom to be disappointed in me and I knew she was. We spent some time not talking, so it takes time to rebuild that trust. She’s living in Hawaii now, so it’s hard, but getting better. She’s an amazing woman and I love her." As for his father, Justin said, that his father was "immature" leaving the family for a year only to return on Father's Day. He recalls his mother saying to him, "If you’re going to be here, you have to be here. There’s a misconception that he's this deadbeat dad, but he has been in my life since. I was with him on weekends and Wednesdays."
Later on, in 2016 the singer went on to give a shout out to his mom during a concert of his. He asked ecstatic fans in Philadelphia to shout "Aloha! Pattie!", reports Bustle. The proud mother wrote on Twitter after 2016's Mother's Day that he called to wish her. "Yes @justinbieber was a good boy and called to wish me Happy Mother's Day!" she wrote.
Just two years after that, the "Baby" singer dedicated a touching social media post to her adding the lyrics of the 1997 Boyz II Men song "A Song for Mama" as the caption. And she responded by posting, "Please forgive me of all of my shortcomings as I forgive you of yours, past present and future!!" she wrote, according to The Blast. "Bless you to be all you were created to be. What an honor it’s been to know you and watch you grow as your mother. We got this. #LoveWins"
It appears that the singer has worked to better himself. In 2019, in a detailed Instagram post, he wrote: "It's taken me years to bounce back from all of these terrible decisions, fix broken relationships, and change relationship habits. Luckily, God blessed me with extraordinary people who love me for me." More recently, his marriage with 23-year-old Hailey Baldwin is mom-approved.
