Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland were all set to say "I do" in June 1991. However, there was a sudden change of plans just three days before the wedding.
Calling off a wedding just days before the big day is no joke. Being a celebrity and doing so is even harder because all eyes are on them, waiting to get some scoop about their big day. Julia Roberts, however, called off her wedding to Flatliners co-star Kiefer Sutherland just three days before the ceremony. Despite making such a bold move, the Pretty Woman actress spent what was supposed to be her wedding day with her fiancé’s friend. Roberts was all set to tie the knot with Sutherland in an extravagant, yet intimate ceremony with 150 guests.
The wedding that was supposed to take place in June 1991, paved the way for a lot of drama. Roberts calling off her wedding came as quite a shock to everyone. She and Sutherland made it seem like they were head over heels in love with each other. People Magazine even called them "Hollywood’s reigning couple." According to PEOPLE, "It was going to be the fantasy wedding of the decade. The four bridesmaids — makeup artist Lucienne Zammit, Julia’s agents, Elaine Goldsmith and Risa Shapiro, and actress Deborah Porter — had already picked up their $425 Manolo Blahnik shoes, dyed seafoam green to match the dresses."
It also stated that the actress spent a whopping $8,000 for her wedding gown. Unexpectedly, Roberts called the wedding off and Sutherland moved out of her house on the day of the ceremony. But Roberts, who had no regrets about her decision, spent her wedding day with her fiancé’s friend, Jason Patric. She was spotted snacking on a Turkey Burger with him. Patric was initially invited to the wedding, but he was later uninvited. "Julia and Kiefer had a big fight over that," stated a source. According to Yahoo, Roberts fled to Ireland with Patric. They stayed at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin and Julia was spotted without her engagement ring.
“The engagement ring was off her finger,” revealed a hotel staff. “She looked very drawn. She had lost a lot of weight. Her hair was a pale orange, like a dye job gone wrong," they added. Their private getaway soon became a public affair as the paparazzi had gotten a whiff of the lovebirds in Ireland, and they camped out in front of the hotel to get a glimpse of them. The couple later slipped away to the countryside. Soon after, Roberts and Patric made their relationship official. No one really knew what really went wrong with Roberts and Sutherland. She'd even acknowledged her love for him in front of the whole world one time.
On receiving the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Steel Magnolias, the actress thanked her "best friend — my beautiful blue-eyed, green-eyed best friend, who gives me everything,” referring to Sutherland. Some people, however, say that it all began when Sutherland moved out of Robert's home and into a hotel. Though he claimed his move was so that he could spend time alone to research for a new role, the rumor was that he was accompanied by a 24-year-old go-go dancer named Amanda Rice. A few weeks later, Sutherland moved back in with Roberts and seemed fine for a few months.
It all went haywire after Rice sold her story to a tabloid and soon, news of her and Sutherland was everywhere. However, Sutherland denied all allegations and said he did not have a romantic relationship with the woman. Recalling the events years later, Sutherland said he was upset that Patric didn't bother to tell him about him falling in love with his fiance. “We were friends, and I’m surprised that I never got a call from him saying I’ve fallen in love with da-da-da. Instead, I found out from a stranger," said the actor. He also thanked Roberts for realizing how silly they were to get into something they did not want.
“I commend Julia for seeing how young and silly we were, even at the last minute, even as painful and as difficult as it was. Thank God she saw it.” He added, "I think she had courage. It wasn't what she wanted to do in the end. And I think it took a lot of courage, in amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, I can't do this," according to Hello. Despite all the drama, Roberts never got married to Patric. Roberts is now happily married to cameraman Daniel Moder, whom she met on the set of her film The Mexican in 2000. The two married in 2002, and are parents to three children.
