Longest-Running Medical Drama 'Grey's Anatomy' To Return With 16th Season In September!

WARNING: Contains Spoilers. After leaving fans on a hook, season 16 is scheduled to come back soon to unravel all the twists and turns that happened in the 15th season's finale.

Season 15's last episode was a literal cliffhanger with people getting fired, confessing their love, and leaving their loved ones to attend to people in need of medical care. Well, now that's a lot to take in, and a lot to wait for the next season. But, it looks like the wait is almost over. The longest-running medical drama in television history announced on Tuesday its return for Season 16 on Thursday, September 26. The happy news was announced on social media, with a picture of Ellen Pompeo looking quite happy. Needless to say, fans were quite happy with the news of their favorite show making a comeback.

On Twitter, @DGreenOfficial commented on the post: My day just got a whole lot better! @LaLobaAmorosa added: I can't wait to see everyone again especially my girls Maggie, Mer, and Amelia. Surely fans were desperate to know what happens next because Mer had just uttered those three words to Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti). No one really expected her to fall in love with anyone after Derek's death, so yes, the anticipation is real.

It wasn't just Grey and DeLuca that left the audience on a hook. All of the main characters, including Karev, Jo Wilson, and everyone else have a vital role in it and fans can't wait any longer to know what is going to happen next. Showrunner Krista Vernoff let out bits and snippets about the latest season during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "It was a creative decision. It was a cliffhanger. I want people to come back [in the fall] and talk all summer and wonder what happens to him. We have not mapped it out," she said.

"I'm on vacation for two weeks and then we'll hit it. What I love about act six of our finale is we gave ourselves so much to play with for next season on all the storylines," she added. Also, Meredith, Richard, and Alex get fired for insurance fraud. "It is consequential AF, as the kids say. We were excited in the writer's room about that. We couldn't stop kind of laughing like, "Holy shit, what have we done?! What are we doing?!"," said she.

"But when you get to 342 episodes — which is where we are — you have the right to take some bold swings, you have to take some bold swings if you want to keep the show fresh and exciting and you don't want people to get ahead of you. You have to be bold. And I feel like we were really bold here and we'll see how it all shakes out." This is when DeLuca takes the fall for Grey and goes to jail for how. Well, how do you not confess your love for someone who's willing to go to jail for you?

Grey's Anatomy seems to be giving out good news one after the other. Just a few months ago, they'd announced that the show's been renewed for two more seasons and that Ellen Pompeo was going to be a part of it. There was a lot of speculation that she may quit the show, but she's cleared the air and stated that she's here to stay. True, she did mention that she was itching to bid farewell to Mer's character, but later, she admitted that she just couldn't get herself to leave.

“I keep saying, ‘I’m ready to move on and I want to stop the show before the ratings go down,’ but the ratings never go down!” she exclaims with a laugh, reports TV Line. “They go down a little bit, but the fact that we are able to hold our [title as ABC’s No. 1 series] is kind of [incredible]. It’s very cool to have this kind of ratings and be on a hit network show in this [Peak TV] landscape.”

“It’s a pretty nice place to work,” she admits. “I like my situation here. As much as the idea of something new appeals to me… the truth is I have three kids. I don’t really want to travel and leave [them]. I don’t want to be a circus traveler and live in hotels. And the network and studio continue to incentivize me and just make me offers that I can’t refuse.” For now, she's back, even though she remains undecided about her future in the series, but we can live with that, can't we?
