Research suggests that cough syrup does more harm to our bodies than we realize. Here's how you can cure a cold and cough overnight.

In most cases, a cold or flu begins with a sore throat, and before you know it you're coughing and sneezing all day long. The endless fatigue and irritation around your nose from wiping it constantly makes you feel even worse. It's an all-around nuisance because being sick means you can barely get any sleep and to top it off, everyone avoids you in a bid to not fall sick themselves. The side effects of cough syrups include dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, nausea vomiting headaches or trouble sleeping, per WebMD. The effects could be caused due to the presence of two ingredients called codeine and dextromethorphan, which could cause severe health complications if taken in high doses. It could possibly hinder your child's ability to battle the impending issues followed by a bout of cold. According to website drugabuse.com, taking high doses of dextromethorphan could cause cognitive dysfunction and impaired memory. These severe side effects are common in different types of cold medications that can be easily purchased on over the counter pharmacies and grocery stores. 

But what makes it more harmful is the mixture of other kinds of drugs within the cough syrup, which can amplify these side effects. As for codeine, the other ingredient in cough syrups, it has a negative effect similar to dextromethorphan. According to the  Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Codeine is a part of a drug group called opioids. Opioids react with the receptors of the same in the brain and can help the body provide pain relief, relaxation, and pleasure. Now, this drug has different effects on different people depending on their weight, size, body tolerance, and whether it's being mixed with other drugs.

The common negative side effects of this drug are dizziness, confusion, tiredness, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, dry mother, and allergic rashes in addition to more side-effects. If the drug codeine has such drastic effects on an adult, imagine how dangerous it would be for your kid. Despite knowing about these effects, many feel that giving their child cough syrup is the only way to get rid of the virus. But, there's an easier, healthier, and quicker option to get rid of the cough, which involves a ginger wrap. Ginger has medicinal properties that can help with digestion, reduction of pain, inflammation, nausea, and in this case provide relief from cold and flu. 



 

Before we begin with the process, it's important to keep in mind that using natural ingredients like raw honey can go a long way to cure the condition and prove to be more beneficial. You could also combine ginger wraps with honey to see the effects almost overnight. The ingredients and materials you will require are:

• 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger or ginger powder

• raw honey

• olive oil

• flour

• napkins

• adhesive tape

• gauze



 

Follow these steps to make these wraps:

1. Mix the honey and flour to a smooth consistency

2. Add olive oil and the ginger before mixing again

3. Apply the mixture on a napkin and wrap gauze around it

4. Lastly, fix it on your chest or back with the help of adhesive tape.

As for adults, the wraps can be kept overnight and can make you sweat more than usual. But it shouldn't be kept for too long in case of children. Keep it on only three hours before going to bed, as children have sensitive skin. The wrap, with no negative effects, will clear the mucus in the lungs during the night and in the morning you can wake up without an irritating cough.
