George Clooney Gave $1 Million Each To 14 Friends Who Helped Him When He Was A Struggling Actor

These included sitcom actor, Richard Kind and business partner, Rande Gerber and others who had seen him struggle as an actor and helped him out. He invited all of them for dinner and to their shock and surprise, a black suitcase with $1 million in cash was waiting for them

George Clooney is one of the most recognizable movie stars in the world. He is known for playing suave roles and is also quite the charmer in real life. Not just that, he is also one of the most vocal critics of the government and supports a number of noble causes.  He's also married to Amal, an international human rights attorney, and have a family together when she gave birth to twins in 2017.  Simply put, Clooney seems to have it covered in most departments. Add to this another feather to his cap: he is also one loyal friend who will be there for you in time of need. Not many people know this, but Clooney once gave his 14 closest friends $1 million each as a gift of gratitude for helping him during his struggle to become a movie star.

A lot of aspiring actors from around the world head to Los Angeles to make it in Hollywood, but very few succeed. Only a struggling actor will know the value of help given during a time of need. A story about Clooney's generosity was posted on the TIL (today I learned) Reddit page and had a lot of people talking. You have to understand why he did this. You can google it in fact but the gist is that all of these people had helped him out while he was struggling as an actor. He crashed on their couches, some paid his rent for a month or two, and other cover car payments or helped him out financially with what very little they had, wrote a user named Brucef310.

The person added, Richard Kind who is one of his best friends let him live rent-free in his apartment for a while because he wasn't getting steady work. Kind is one of Clooney's oldest friends when he was struggling to find a foot in the industry. Kind, the sitcom actor, who starred in  Mad About You and Spin City "really helped him out." Another friend who Clooney really banked on back then was Rande Gerber, a businessman with whom Clooney started a Tequila company, Casamigos. Gerber who is married to a former supermodel Cindy Crawford spoke about his friendship with Clooney and about other close friends back in 2013 during an interview with MSNBC's Headliners reports E!News.

Gerber revealed how Clooney invited the close group of 14 friends for dinner and surprised them with the $1 million in cash. Gerber said, "There's a group of guys that we call ‘The Boys.' George had called me and ‘The Boys' and said, ‘Hey, mark September 27, 2013 on your calendar. Everyone's going to come to my house for dinner." The $1 million was packed in black suitcases and were in their respective tables." He also shared a special message with them where he reminisced about the earlier years.  Gerber said, "George begins to say, 'Listen, I want you guys to know how much you've meant to me and how much you mean to me in my life'."

"'I came to L.A., I slept on your couch. I'm so fortunate in my life to have all of you and I couldn't be where I am today without all of you. So, it was really important to me that while we're still all here together, that I give back. So I want you all to open your suitcases.'" Everyone was shocked but Clooney continued, "'I know we've all been through some hard times, some of you are still going through it." Clooney said they no longer need to worry about  "'your kids, you don't have to worry about, you know, school, you don't have to worry about paying your mortgage.'"

Gerber highlighted that not many in the friend circle were doing so well. He said, "One was working at a bar in Texas at the airport, trying just to support his family. Rides a bicycle to work every day. I mean these are guys that took care of George and now he's giving it all back." He added, "And George said, ‘Not only that, I have paid everyone's taxes so this million dollars is yours.'" Gerber said he refused to take the money at first but then Clooney put a condition and announced it too. Clooney told everyone according to Gerber, "'If Rande doesn't take the million dollars, nobody gets it.'" Gerber had no choice but to take it.

Another Reddit user, charm803 pointed to another incident that showed the close friendship of Clooney's circle. The 14 friends attended Richard Kind's dad's funeral. They wrote: Kind "was giving the eulogy, and looked up and saw George Clooney and all his friends in the back. He didn't think they would be there, as their careers had taken off by then and they were pretty busy in their lives and hadn't seen each other in a while. They really do have a good circle of friends.
