Penzi and Nandi, two sisters, seemed particularly excited as the snow fell
It is unusual for the dry areas of Arizona to experience snowfall. But on Wednesday when the weather took everyone by surprise, elephants at the Reid Park Zoo in Tuscon were having a ball. The zoo's photographer snapped some truly adorable pictures of the animals both young and old rolling on the ground in joy. The zoo shared a video on its Facebook page showing the elephants playing in the snowfall. Alongside the pictures, they wrote a caption that focused on two of the zoo's junior elephants named Penzi, and her sister Nandi. "Penzi took the snowflakes as a cue to play in the stream and slip and slide in the mud," the post read.
It added, "Even her older sister, Nandi, could not resist a roll in the mud on a snowy day!" While most of the other animals in the zoo stayed cozy in their heated night houses during the flurry, the elephants had something else in mind. "But the elephant herd chose to stay out and play!" the post noted. In another post, the zoo shared more images of Penzi. "We can't get enough of Penzi in the snow! Check out these photos from Keeper Matt of Penzi's first time seeing snowflakes," it read. On its website, the zoo revealed that the sister elephants "had a blast watching the snow and rolling around in the slushy mud." Penzi went one step further and even tried to eat the flakes right off the ground. She did not stop even as the flurry was winding down. The zoo's posts on Facebook became extremely popular with each being liked and shared thousands of times and commented on by hundreds of people.
Erin Blankert commented: Amazing that something so basic as weather can bring so much joy... to the elephants and to us for watching them enjoy the snow! Citlali Crdns-Peña added: This is adorable!! My daughter is for sure missing her regular zoo visits. Judy Robbins stated: So adorable. I loved the photo of her lying down with her eyes wide open as if she can't believe what she is seeing. Karen Orlando had nothing but love for Penzi. She wrote: Penzi is such a love Just like a little kid slipping & sliding & having fun in the snow & mud. Thanks for sharing. Made me laugh when she slipped & fell. Another fan of Penzi named Nancy Witt observed: What a fun video----Penzi is just like a small child with the first snowfall of the season. She looks like she is enjoying it so much!
Dr. Sue Tygielski, the Director of Zoological Operations said, "A weather event can always be exciting for the elephants, but a first snow is always special for a baby elephant. Penzi took the snowflakes as a cue to play in the stream and slip and slide in the mud. Even her older sister, Nandi, could not resist a roll in the mud on a snowy day!"
