Heartbreaking footage, that has been viewed over 14 million times, of an elderly Chinese couple bidding a final farewell to each other in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has broken the hearts of many across the world. 85-year-old Zhang and his 87-year-old wife, Wen, were admitted at the Xindu Third People's Hospital in Chengdu, China within a day of each other reports the Daily Mail.
Wen, who has Alzheimer's, was admitted to the hospital on January 17, after becoming unconscious. Zhang, too, suffers from lung cancer, atherosclerosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He was rushed to the hospital on January 16 to the respiratory department.
After losing consciousness, because of respiratory failure, Wen was placed on a ventilator. According to Metro, while Zhang's health had stabilized over the month, but his wife's health, unfortunately, did not. The husband was told that his wife's condition was deteriorating, and he decided to meet her one last time fearing that he wouldn't be able to do so otherwise.
He reportedly told his children on January 30, "I may not be able to see her again in this lifetime. I want to see her." This meant that he had to be shifted from his room to the ICU where she was placed. After seeking the doctor's permission, the man went to see his wife. The staff generously allowed him to be placed on a bed next to her to share these last moments together. The couple was reunited at 3.50 p.m.
Wen, who had been surviving with the help of the machine, reached out to her husband and held his hand, despite being mostly unconscious from the time she had been admitted, nurses say. The emotional video, taken on that day, shows Zhang affectionately calling out to his wife. She looks at him, and struggles to reply but is unable to say anything because she's intubated.
Having spent some time with her, he returned to his room. Sadly, his wife passed away in the wee hours of the morning, the following day. His children chose not to tell him of this tragedy at the time.
After the emotional yet powerful video of the two pensioners was circulated on Weibo, it racked up over 14 million views in under 24 hours.
