They first met during Madonna and Sean Penn's wedding and there was an instant connection.
Cher, 74, has always been one to be open about her life, but she remained tight-lipped about one particular relationship for a very long time. During an interview in 2018, she delved into details of her relationship with Tom Cruise, 57. According to The Metro, the singer and the actor first crossed paths in 1985, during Madonna's wedding to Sean Penn. While their paths just crossed at the time, destiny brought them back together a few months later at the White House to claim an Outstanding Learning Disabled Achiever Award from First Lady Nancy Reagan, reports InStyle.
The singer opened up about what it was that attracted them to each other. “A bunch of people who were dyslexic were invited to the White House, and Tom and I are both dyslexic,” Cher explained. “We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there,” she continued, as per Daily Mail. Surprisingly, she managed to keep her relationship with Cruise under wraps for quite some time, until she herself revealed it when she made an appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen'. During the show, she revealed that she’d "had the greatest lovers ever" and that Tom Cruise was "in her top five" of all time.
She further added that it was nothing more than a fling, really, as she told Cohen “It was pretty hot and heavy for a little minute. The person that I knew was a great, lovable guy.” Cher has also spoken about Cruise during an interview with Oprah in 2008. “I was so crazy about him,” she told the talk show host. "He was so wonderful … And he was so, like, different. He was a shy boy.” Without volition, Oprah asked Cher about her date with Cruise and how long it lasted. Though she did not reveal the exact duration, she did say that the date was quite a long one.
She also added that she lived in his apartment, hinting that the relationship lasted for a few months. But, they split due to their conflicting schedules, according to Entertainment Today. Things came to an amicable end between the two, and the two of them are still friends but she doesn't really understand his deal with Scientology. "Yeah! Though I don’t get what he does, that whole Scientology thing. I can’t understand it so I just… don’t," she shrugged. After their separation, Cher went on to date producer Joshua Donen, aspiring actor Rob Camilletti, Richie Sambora, Eric Clapton, screenwriter Ron Zimmerman, and former Hells Angel Tim Medvetz.
Now, Cher is single and she admits that she's finding it quite hard to date. "Not this week. I’m still on the lookout,” she teases. "The problem I have with all the boyfriends lately is that I don’t want to go anyplace with them because you can’t keep a relationship going in this kind of goldfish bowl, where everything you do and every picture you have taken will be on Instagram. There’s no way to keep something special." In an industry where most actors like keeping their plastic surgeries under wraps, Cher has no qualms in admitting it. "Yes, I’ve had a facelift, but who hasn’t?” she questioned.
