Dog Found Buried Alive Was Hacked With Machete, ‘Bleeding From Every Inch Of Her Body’

Leialoha the dog was saved by animal rescuers after enduring cuts, burns and swellings as she was buried alive by a machete-wielding man in Hawaii.

In a shocking report by KITV, a dog in West Oahu beach, Hawaii, was rescued after being buried alive by an individual who claimed to be a 'machete-wielding man'. The poor dog, called Leialoha, has suffered through multiple injuries, including being sunburnt, cut and had nearly all its fur ripped off.

According to sources, animal rescue organization PAWS of Hawaii was tipped off about Leialoha by a member of the public, who saw a man burying her. PAWS reported that, "The dog, whom the shelter named Leialoha (beloved child), was swollen, severely dehydrated, covered in sores, and was missing ninety percent of her fur."

The authorities rescued her and cleaned her up best as they could, but she was still looking in a really bad state with her skin lesions and swollen limbs. The poor dog also had cuts on her front paws, believed to be inflicted on her at the beach right before she was rescued.

Though the person who committed this crime would not likely be prosecuted due to lack of clear evidence, the primary concern of the authorities and the good samaritans of Hawaii is about the dog's recovery.

Foster carer Amanda who saw the dog's photos on Facebook said, "I was scrolling Facebook while the girls were getting haircuts and saw that there was a dog on the west side of Oahu that had been buried in the sand and been cut on her leg with a machete. She was badly sunburned, covered in sores and missing most of her fur. My heart was broken and I knew she needed us to foster her."

"My heart was broken and I knew she needed us to foster her, she was bleeding from every inch of her body. Last night, she came out while we had friends over to see what was for dinner and has been liking being under the coffee table. She has a long way to go, but the worst is over."

Ku'ulei Durand, the executive director of PAWS of Hawaii, told KITV, "He (the owner) felt he was ending her suffering by trying to end her life, instead of getting her the help she needed. Her skin, if you were able to smell her, is rancid because she has so many open sores that are infected. The man who buried her, we were led to believe, had started to cut her. "

"Enforcement around animal laws is very difficult. Unless you have a video of the animal being abused, a picture and a report isn't going to stick," added Durand. "She is a tough girl, so strong and amazing. A great personality. It is so wonderful to see dogs come out of their shell, even with just a day of love. A lot of people will be upset over the condition of Leialoha and the person that hurt her. There are so many things you can do to help, like contact local rescues or shelters and see what you can do to assist."

The group who had rescued Leialoha immediately rushed the helpless pup to a local vet called Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services. She was treated upon in quick notice where she was given fluids, medicine, and blood tests. “Someone had just buried her and they had a machete so who knows what was next,” the animal rescue group told the vet.

Dr. Kelly Dowdall-Garberson, who is a veterinarian with Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services, said, "Severe sunburn, lesions, swollen limbs in her extremities -- that is a sign of being very dehydrated and very poor care. 20-30% of the animals we help are rescue animals. We partner with rescue groups around the island," added Dr. Dowdall-Garberson. It's indeed a lucky thing that Leialoha survived through her ordeal.
