The showrunner and producer Liz Feldman revealed how the "now very complicated dynamic" between the two women will become "even more complicated."
Netflix's uber-popular show Dead To Me is not so dead after all. The Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini-starrer has been picked up for a second season. Much to our delight, the two central female characters of the gripping show will be reuniting once again to provide their audience some closure about the major cliffhanger that their complicated friendship had left behind. Apart from featuring Applegate in the role of the rage-filled widow, Jen, the show also marks her comeback to the miniscreen after seven years.
According to PEOPLE, the creator of the show Liz Feldman will once again take over the role of showrunner and executive producer for the series. The "traumedy" (a mix of tragedy and comedy) will have several other co-producers like Applegate, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Jessica Elbaum, and Christie-Smith. The first 10-episode of the heart-stopping dark comedy left their fans begging for some for as the final scene closed upon them. If you haven't watched the binge-worthy show yet, you should definitely do that! Here's a quick rundown to get you started.'
The series is about two women Jen (Applegate), a dedicated mother who is trying to cope with the sudden death of her husband in a hit-and-run case and Judy (Cardellini) who has her own dark secrets, hidden deep within her. The two meet each other at a support group and are quick to form a friendship which makes them inseparable. However, things take a darker turn (like it wasn't dark enough) as Judy’s secrets and deceptions plunge the duo into some dark and complicated places. While the first season ended in a major cliffhanger, Feldman revealed how Jen and Judy's relationship will be way more complex in the upcoming season.
"It will be about the further exploration of this friendship, and relationship, and now very complicated dynamic, or even more complicated dynamic between these two women, revealed the 42-year-old during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "But in the most basic way, the score has been evened. What I wanted to do was create a situation where they’re forced together, and they need each other now in some ways more than they did at the beginning of season 1."Feldman also discussed casting Applegate and Cardellini as the central characters without even conducting a chemistry read between the two actresses.
Having worked with Applegate on a previous venture, which ultimately fell through, the showrunner had already established a good relationship with the actress. So, it was a "no brainer" for the Feldman to cast her as one of the leads. "No, we did not do a chemistry read. They're both stars, they're 'offer only' kind of gals. And so, when Christina's name initially came up it was such a no-brainer because I had been working with her on another project that we ultimately didn't follow through with, but we had already had a relationship. So literally the very first name our incredible casting directors, Sherry Thomas, and Russell Scott said for Jen was Christina. And when that sort of thing happens, and you get the chills, you're like, 'Okay, that's meant to be,'" said Feldman.
Now, for her counterpart, Feldman decided to "roll the dice" for the Bloodline star whose warmth and inherent humor expressed her beyond measure. "When Linda's name was brought up, I was already such a fan of hers, actually from Bloodline. So when I sat down with Linda to meet her for the first time, I was so taken by how she's just got such great warmth and she's just so naturally funny. I just thought like, oh, there's a softness and a vulnerability there that would be so great, not just for Judy, but to play in contrast to Christina's Jen. So we kind of rolled the dice. Sometimes you roll the dice and it turns up lucky sevens," revealed Feldman.
Casting the two powerhouse-like women opposite each other, definitely turned out to be a masterstroke. The CBS Television Studios show, produced for Netflix mainly obtained positive reviews from several critics. With the end of the first season, Dead To Me, had garnered a lot of attention which was evident from the 87 percent rating on Rotten Tomato. The show also acquired 8.2 out of 10 stars on IMDb. Talented actors like James Marsden, Ed Asner, and Brandon Scott were also seen at their best apart from Applegate and Cardellini. The official premiere date for the series' second season is yet to be announced and cannot wait!
