Christopher Pekny, 28, was about to be a father and wanted nothing more than to share the joyous news with his friends and family. It was just before Christmas that he learned his girlfriend was pregnant with a boy! So, he was building a device to use for their gender reveal party and had sought help from his brother, soon-to-be uncle Michael. Unfortunately, the device exploded while it was being constructed, injuring Michael and killing the dad-to-be, reported PEOPLE. The devastating incident took place on Sunday, Feb 22nd, 2021. Both the state police and the bomb disposal unit are currently investigating the incident. After the tragic accident, Christopher's older brother spoke with New York Times, calling the explosion a "freak accident."

"The freakiest of freak accidents that I could ever imagine," the 34-year-old said. Peter went on to reveal that both Christopher and Michael had prior experience fixing and building different things. Christopher was also a talented mechanic who thoroughly enjoyed working on cars. Peter also added that Christopher and Michael were super close to each other. "If you could think of any two people who were the closest two people — amplify that tenfold," he said of his two brothers' bond. "He was really looking forward to starting a family," said Peter about his late brother Christopher. "He was really starting to settle down and grow up."

Christopher and his family own Robin Hood Diner, a restaurant in the Catskills area of New York, and the restaurant shared a statement on their Facebook page. They shared: We are deeply saddened and must inform you all of the loss of our dear and beloved Christopher. We appreciate the overwhelming display of love and support that you all have shown. The Robin Hood will be closed for the immediate future. More details will be posted when we have them available. Thank you. People expressed their grief under the post. Dina Bolnik shared: So sorry for Christophers passing at such a special time. It's heartbreaking to hear such sad news. Pete and Jan we are praying for your family in this time of need for everyone involved..

Chris Hemeke wrote: Sending love Jan, Pete, and Peter jr. No one deserves what you are going through I'm terribly sorry for the loss. May God bless you all with peace throughout this tragic time. My heart pours for you all. Sandy Gibson Taggart added: Mom and I are so very saddened to hear of your loss, We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers to give you strength during this time. Unfortunately, this is not the first time such accidents have occurred. As we reported back in 2018, one gender reveal party even started a wildfire that took over a week to be put out. It's a rather unnecessary celebration, don't you think?

In fact, High Gloss and Sauce blogger Jenna Myers Karvunidis, who says she's the one who actually popularized gender reveal parties, recently penned an open letter asking others to stop the practice. She shared: I've felt a lot of mixed feelings about my random contribution to the culture. It just exploded into crazy after that. Literally - guns firing, forest fires, more emphasis on gender than has ever been necessary for a baby. Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn't live in 2019 and didn't know what we know now - that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what's between their legs. Maybe it's time to stop gender reveal parties for good?
