A drunk driver hit 26-year-old Somchai Lurak's car at 80mph when the family had stopped their vehicle at a red light.
A restaurant manager from Idaho, U.S., miraculously, survived a horrific car crash only to lose everything else. Somchai Lurak, a 26-year-old father was driving the car along with his fiance, his three daughters step Aneena, 6, Kya, 5, and Drayka, 3, and their stepmother, Emma Weigand, 25, when the unfortunate event took place. While Lurak, his fiance, and the girls' stepmother, Weigand, were able to escape with grave injuries, the same could not be said for the kids who passed away on impact says reports.
Weigand, who was sitting in the passenger seat sustained a few broken ribs and a fracture in her right arm, but Lurak had to be hospitalized due to the seriousness of his injuries. The 26-year-old's heartbroken brother, Anthony Smock, 34, and sister Amanda were given the difficult task of breaking the tragic news to Lurak who was lying helplessly in a hospital bed. According to The Sun, Smock said, "Just when I think I might be getting over the worst, tears just start pouring out of my eyes."
The devasted uncle further added, "I start thinking about my nieces' beautiful smiles and sweet little giggles, and how every time I would sweep them up into my arms and give them hugs and kisses. I want them back and I want my brother to be able to have his babies. It's a miracle we still have Somchai and his recovery has been improving." Providing some details about his brother's condition Smock said, "Due to the accident, he is missing seven vertebrae in his neck and because of the place it is in his neck, doctors are amazed that he has any feeling in his legs whatsoever."
"As of right now he's classed as an incomplete quadriplegic - he's got feeling but no movement. We don't know whether he'll ever walk again," he added. Of course, the family had to spend a lot of money on hospital bills, but thanks to a few people, they have been able to gather a handsome sum of money with their donations on a GoFundMe account created for him. "But his road to recovery will be long and due to the amount of medical care he needs, it will be expensive, said Smock adding, "We've been overwhelmed with the support and have already been overwhelmed as family, friends and even strangers have donated more than $50,000 to help."
As per a report by The Sun, the family car was stopped at a red light when a drunk driver rammed into their vehicle at 80mph. The person was on his way home after visiting a family member when he took the Lurak family by surprise. Ever since then he admitted to his offense and awaits to be sentenced for three counts of vehicular manslaughter. Now, the family is sharing their devastating story in order to prevent them from drinking and driving.
"Our family have three pieces of our hearts missing forever now. To everyone everywhere, I'm begging you. Never ever drink and drive - it's selfish and stupid and can destroy people’s lives and families forever. Just because you may get home safely once or a hundred times doesn’t mean you're a better driver when you're drunk than anyone else. Don’t confuse being fortunate or lucky with being uncompromised while drinking drunk. Sooner or later it may cost you or someone else their life. One act of careless indifference for others can impact a stranger's life and yours forever. And you're the one who will have to live with it sober," said Smock.
