After callously throwing the dog into the water, the man then smiles at the camera. Enraged social media users demanded strict action against the man.
Trigger warning: This story has details of animal abuse that readers may find disturbing
This is the age of quick internet fame. "Do it for the Vine" was a phrase chanted by people, popularized by ex-Viner Lele Pons, before they did something inadvertently stupid or dangerous for the six-second video platform, Vine. The more ridiculous the video, the more it got shared. The shock value was everything and that meant a shortcut to become internet famous. Vine may have discontinued but the spirit of reckless abandon has moved on to other platforms, including YouTube and TikTok, being the most recent one. To accumulate views on a video for the five minutes of fame, people are really willing to do just about anything.
“Do it for the vine” was truly revolutionary in demonstrating the forced participation, entertainment, and presence on social media that is experienced by today’s youth. In this essay I will— Logan (@CogoLogo) February 6, 2021
Last year, a man from the Indian city of Bhopal, in the state of Madya Pradesh, wanted to become internet famous. But unlike most creators who put their own safety at risk, this man decided to put the life of another living being on the line to rake up views and followers. In the disturbing video, that did end up going viral, the man can be seen picking up a stray dog and throwing it off a bridge into a lake that was several feet below. After callously throwing the innocent animal into the water, the man then smiles at the camera. The video did upset a lot of people and animal activists demanded that action be taken on this man.
The location was ascertained to be along the upper lake at Boat club in the Shyamla Hills area in Bhopal. The video was shot during the later hours of the evening. The police were able to identify the man from the video but were unsure of who the person behind the camera was, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The man throwing the dog was identified as Salman Khan, a resident of Tila Jamalpura area in Bhopal city, who works in a photo studio. He was booked by the Shyamla Hills police station under section 429 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which deals with killing or maiming of animals as well as under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Shyamla Hills police station in-charge Tarun Rathi said, “The date when the accused indulged in the crime is yet to be known. However, when a police team questioned his friends they said it was a very old video as far as they had knowledge about it. However, police couldn’t know immediately if the dog was dead or alive and who shot the act in the video.” The act was condemned by social media users and a student from Bhopal even filed a complaint against Khan. Twitter user Rahul Sachdev wrote: It is such a shame that people go this far to get fame. Such a pathetic display of humanity.

The man was eventually found by the police and was arrested. He is also believed to have a history of animal abuse. Another Twitter user stated: Poor puppy. I hope he survived. Animal abusers are such sick, cruel bullies. They need to be prosecuted and jailed. Stiffer sentencing also needed. Punishment according to the IPC could mean imprisonment for up to five years, a fine, or both. As per Arré, the accused was denied bail and the decision was supported by animal activists who thought this was justified for the crime he committed. Many people expressed their shock and disappointment that the man harmed an innocent being for likes and shares.
