Athena was cruelly abandoned by her own owners when they got two dogs. She went to her favorite neighbor's house and continued to stay there till she and her kittens were adopted.
This is a heartening story of a cat that was abandoned by its owners only later to find a home and a family in the neighboring house occupied by a single dad reports The Dodo. Athena was a cat who lived two doors away from the house of Grace Redmon's dad. The cat would however regularly be at their house even though Grace's dad already had two cats. Grace herself was an avid animal lover. Athena would often be seen doing one thing or another in the backyard. It seemed like her place of comfort outside her own house and she was welcomed by her neighbor with an open heart. After Grace's dad would be done with his work and went back home, he would see the cat right outside the house as though waiting for her favorite neighbor.
Things were going great so far when Grace's dad began noticing that Athena was regularly sleeping on the front porch of his house. This worried both daughter and father and they speculated that something bad had befallen either on Athena or her owners.
All this happened over a period of around 10 months. Athena's family had gotten two dogs and they did not get along at all. As a result, Athena was cruelly thrown out of her house and left to fend for herself.
So while she may have been abandoned, she picked up the pieces and headed straight to Grace's dad home. This was the only place that provided her comfort and affection besides her own owners before they abandoned her. Grace also noticed that Athena may have been pregnant. She said, "It was hard to tell, though, since she was so skinny."
However, one day, Grace's dad heard the meows coming from under his porch. But when he went to check up on them he encountered a roadblock. He couldn't find the kittens as Athena had hidden her babies very well.
For a while, Grace's dad did not really know what to do. He just had to wait and watch for a while till Athena and her kittens made the next move.
Several weeks later, Grace's dad was in for a surprise. When he went to his backyard, he spotted Athena and her kittens. He took a picture and informed his daughter who immediately rushed to help him try and bring the cat and her litter inside his house. The kittens were roughly around eight weeks old.
Initially, Grace's dad was hesitant to take care of the new kittens as he already two older cats with him and wasn't sure if they would get along, but he was persuaded and convinced by his daughter to take the new litter in, so that they would get all the tender loving care they needed.
Even though she wanted to care for Athena and her kittens, Grace was not able to do so because she didn't have space in her own house as she had a house full of cats. Athena and her family were spayed or neutered as well as vaccinated. She then spent her time at the basement of Grace's dad's house and was gradually introduced to her extended family - the other cats in the house. Athena's three kittens were named Apollo, Zeus, and Artemis.
Although there were now three cats and three kittens in the house, Grace's dad slowly but surely began to have a soft spot for the new entrants at home. Although his house was full, her dad had planned to keep Athena and give the rest of her kittens for adoption. Grace said, "Initially my father wanted to only keep Athena and put the kittens up for adoption, then he wanted to keep Athena and Artemis, then wanted to keep Apollo as well."
Grace reasoned with her dad that it wouldn't be fair to keep the rest of the kittens and send one away. She said, "He wavered for a while but I finally said that it wasn’t fair to just send Zeus away. Admittedly, I laid the guilt trip on him pretty heavily, but I knew he wanted to keep them and was just putting up token resistance." Finally, Grace's dad admitted that Athena and her family had found a forever home in his heart and home. It's been six months now and they couldn't be happier. The older two cats enjoy taking care of the younger ones. And Athena has never been so content and thrilled in her new surroundings.
