Keeping the current global pandemic in mind, the couple made the difficult decision of not having any guests at their wedding.
Bindi Irwin tied the knot with long time boyfriend Chandler Powell in a private ceremony on Wednesday. The venue chosen to commemorate this auspicious day was the family's Australian Zoo and it was perfect. Taking to Instagram, the couple made the delightful announcement adding that they made the difficult decision of not having any guests due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. March 25th 2020 ❤️ We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now, she wrote.
After planning their special day for almost a year, the pair had to make some drastic changes keeping in mind the importance of social distancing. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history. Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens, continued the Crikey! It's the Irwins star.
Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this - stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS! she added in the heartfelt post. Sharing the same picture, Powell, 23, too expressed his happiness by writing: We’re finally married! ❤️ Today, March 25, 2020, marks the most amazing day of my life. I married my best friend. After almost a year of planning, we changed everything so that we could enjoy a safe and small private ceremony at our home, Australia Zoo. As we embark on this new life chapter I hope that we can share some love in the world, especially during this challenging time.
Welcoming Powell into their family, Robert Irwin left a comment on his post which read: I couldn’t be happier to welcome you into our family ❤️ It was a beautiful day! The two first met in November 2013 when the former wakeboarded traveled to Australia for a competition. During his stay, Powell visited the zoo with his family, where the Irwins work and live. "It just so happened that Bindi was giving tours that day," recalled Powell while speaking to PEOPLE. "I’m like, 'Wow she is amazing.'" The pair "hit it off right away," he revealed, adding, "We haven’t looked back since."
The young couple got engaged last year after dating for six years, reports CNN. After getting her family's approval first, Powell popped the question in honor of Irwin's 21st birthday and enlisted the help of her brother Robert who secretly captured the special moment. At the time, the Animal Planet star told PEOPLE she wanted to have a candle lighting ceremony during her wedding in honor of her Crocodile hunter father who died on September 4, 2006. "So we’ll be able to all get up as a little family and light a candle in his honor and share a few words on what an amazing dad he was and still is," she said.
Keeping her promise, she did light candles in her dad's honor and had Robert walk her down the aisle. During a previous interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 21-year-old conservationist said, "I think that for me, it’ll be really important that Robert walks me down the aisle." It was something her father would have wanted, she added. "He (Robert) will definitely be the one to walk me down the aisle when the time comes, and I think that will make it really special. And I think that’s what dad would have wanted as well," said Irwin.
