Kirsten Williams was in her tech class where she is the only female student when her male classmates decided to have a discussion about what consent means.
Locker room talk is often mistaken to be innocent banter among boys and men. In reality, however, it is actually some of the most harmful and toxic exchanges men indulge in. Instead of being held accountable by their peers or even their superiors, it is more often than not dismissed as "jokes" and excuses like "boys will be boys" are made, diminishing the consequences of the opinions these men hold. Gender disparity is still a very real problem and spaces occupied by a majority of men can be perceived as unsafe for women. A case in point was when a woman recorded her male peers make rape jokes in the classroom, well outside the sphere of the locker room.
I feel so bad for women in STEM/tech/male dominated industries. This is ridiculous pic.twitter.com/4vYn1m6y5b— Bryce Glover🌞 (@bryeonce) July 15, 2021
Kirsten Williams was in her tech class where she is the only female student. In a video that has now gone viral on TikTok and other social media sites, she is seen discreetly recording a video of herself as a bunch of male students in the class seem to be discussing what counts as consent when it comes to sex. The video was captioned: POV: you're the only girl in tech class. Williams had a mask on as she recorded the disturbing discussion. It was uploaded only a day ago but has already been watched more than 2.8 million times.
The first voice of an unidentified male student says, “No matter how big or small your d*** is, they can’t feel it either way.” This is followed by another person who says, “Or you could just find one that doesn’t talk when you ask them for consent, and it’s yes any time.” One more person adds, “Or a blind one, so they don’t know where you’re at.” After every statement, the people off-screen can be heard guffawing at what is essentially a discussion about sexual assault. One person finally challenged the disturbing discourse by asking, “So you’re saying silence is consent? That if they’re knocked out it’s consent?”
But the one question that could have led to a more productive discussion was cut short by another joke. “Say nothing if you can consent!” one person stated. One self-aware individual then proclaims, “Just so you know every single one of us in this room is going to hell.” Probably the only thing they may have got right during this entire episode. “We’re already there sweetheart, don’t worry,” another person added. The video was soon shared on Twitter and Reddit as well.
Shout-out to the one man who appeared to try and question these guys. We need more like you 😭— Ava (@AvaGG) July 15, 2021
Twitter user Ava wrote: This is so disgusting on so many levels... never mind the fact that they're joking about sexual assault in FRONT of her face. Her account also got banned after posting this coincidentally. It's just locker room talk!? I'm sure they're nice guys!? What's the issue here? In a follow-up tweet she added, The fact that the video only starts at this part...like you know they were saying WILD s*** before she turned her cam on.
The video was also shared to Reddit by u/IdiocyHasGrace who wrote: This was honestly terrifying to watch. Many women in tech could sadly, relate to the video and shared their experiences as well. One user wrote: Feels like my CS classes. God, I didn’t realize how weird some dudes were until I changed my major to computer science. I was friends with some of the few CS girls, dudes were weird af to them, and that was just the stuff in public. Another Redditor shared: I was the only female in an Engineering course at college, and it was exactly the same. The teachers joined in as well sometimes. Needless to say, this is a problem that needs to be addressed properly instead of brushing it under the rug.
