This Belgian man who's been receiving pizza for the last nine years says he's stressed out about it.
Who doesn't like a surprise pizza delivery? The large box of hot, cheesy, and doughy goodness is on everyone's mind, almost all the time. Nothing beats the feeling of getting one without having ordered it. But, even a happy surprise such as this can turn into your nightmare if the surprise never stops like in the case of this Belgian man, Jean Van Landeghem - who has been receiving "free food" for the last nine years. According to the Brussels Times, the 65-year-old is so stressed out due to this, he is "losing sleep" after constantly being barraged with food he never ever ordered for.
Has to happen in Belgium and nowhere else ! 😋😋😂https://t.co/0KUkmHULr3— Sebastien Pastor (@elsuperseby) June 11, 2020
What's worse is he's received deliveries several times in a single day too. "It started nine years ago," Van Landeghem told Het Laatste Nieuws. "Suddenly, a pizza delivery man handed me a whole load of pizzas. But I hadn’t ordered anything," he added. When it initially started, he thought it was a mistake and that somebody gave the wrong address but he realized something was amiss when orders of pittas, kebabs, and pizzas kept rolling in. "It can be on a weekday or during weekends, and at any time of day. [The orders arrive from] delivery services in Turnhout, but also from the surrounding area. I have even had orders delivered to me at 2:00 AM," the senior citizen said.
Things have gotten so out of hand, he is constantly stressed out now and even dreads whenever he hears a scooter on the street. "I cannot sleep anymore," he said. "I start shaking every time I hear a scooter on the street. I dread that someone will come to drop off hot pizzas yet another time." Things aren't annoying just for him, the constant orders are a nuisance for the restaurants as well as Van Landeghem has refused to pay for any of the orders. “I have always refused the deliveries, so I have never paid for anything,” he added.
He even remembers the worst day of all in January 2019 - when he had ten deliveries made out to him including one particular order which had 14 pizzas. Speaking about the day, he said: "It costs them money and they have to throw the food away. On the day that ten deliveries showed up, I did the math: it cost €450." What's even puzzling is, Van Landeghem is not the ordering kind as he prefers to buy frozen pizzas from Colruyt or Aldi. Sadly, he isn't the only one enduring the torture for the last nine years, a friend of his from Herenthout has also been the butt of the same harassment and they are in regular contact to inform each other of impending orders.
"A friend of mine who lives in Herenthout is going through exactly the same thing as I am. She has been receiving pizza she has not ordered for nine years, too. Sometimes we both get them on the same day. When that happens, we warn each other to expect a delivery.” According to Van Landeghem, the person behind this is someone they both know. Talking about what he would do to the person if he ever found out who it was, the old man said: "I cannot take it anymore. When I find out whoever has been bothering me for the past nine years, it will not be their best day,” he said. This goes to show surprises aren't always of the happy kind and in fact, can significantly impact one's sanity.
